The Disease of Moderate Muslims

Life is not always black and white, but there are times when we are forced to adopt a certain position. The words of George Bush after 9/11: “you are either with us or against us” is one such example, when it became necessary for Muslims and non-Muslims to state their position.

The Royal Court Theatre has recently launched a call for scripts for Unheard Voices – a playwriting competition which offers young Muslim writers a chance to see their work performed on the theatre’s famous main stage in London.

Writers from the Muslim community, aged 16-25, who think they’ve got what it takes, should send in a short scene to the theatre.

It also insists that Christians and Muslims worship the same god.

Ban foreign language imams - peer

Foreign imams who do not learn English should be banned from giving sermons in UK mosques, a Labour peer has said.

Lord Ahmed's comments come as a survey suggests imams lack professional and language skills to tackle the threat of radicalism among young British Muslims.

Only 8% of imams preaching in British mosques were born in the UK, it found.

Research at 300 mosques by Chester University for BBC News and the BBC Asian Network also indicated only 6% speak English as a first language.

'Islamic duty' to help UK police

Muslims have been told it is their 'Islamic duty' to co-operate with the police to ensure Britain's safety.

The statement was agreed at a "deeply significant" meeting in London held by the Muslim Council of Britain.

More than 200 people, including imams, community activists and police representatives, gathered to lay out ways to combat the threat of terrorism.

A spokesman said there was a real willingness to accept the "problem within the Muslim community".
