Judda u should go study Islamic studies in detail before u make crass comments like that. in [4:34] the Arabic word used is "wadribuhunna," from the root word "darb." Linguistically, "darb" has many meanings, some of which include to hit or strike lightly. The English translations may be misleading in some cases and that is why it is important to go to the Arabic sources and see how the scholars have interpreted this verse.

there are many Ahadith in which the Prophet (s.a.w) forbids men to beat their wives. and it is further explained by the sahaba that this 'light hitting' is such done by a miswak, something that would b an admonition without causing pain or harm.

the point still stands, it aint banned

Aasiyah, how did the presentation go then?

thanx for asking, i was just going to post here about it... i was gonna say:

YIPPEE!! its over and it went really well Alhamdulillah! Biggrin

and i wanted to thank all of u for ur advice, help and encouragement, i honestly dunno how i wudv been able to do it without u lot. coz usually i wudv discussed things with my parents but they werent at home, my mom luckily got back from abroad 2 hours before my presentation was due so she came with me.

she said i was really good!! i was quite surprised with myself aswell actually - even tho on the inside i was shaking with nervousness i managed to pull it off alhumdulillah and the Chair told me afterwards that i appeared really confident! so hayder u were right - i ges once i started, i was ok. (at the beginning i cudv sworn my voice was shaking a little but mom sed it wasnt, mayb she was just being nice!)

i didnt hav time to prepare notes, in hindsight i think tht was probably a good thing coz i wudv looked down at my notes too much then and less at the audience - this way i literally did things off the top of my head, and alhumdulillah i had a lot to say as this is a common (and vast) topic.

they had loads of Qs, which was great, and according to mom i answered them fairly well... i will post a lil' later bout some of the Qs asked, in a rush at the mo.

but MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT for me was that i actually got my audience to laugh!! Smile i managed to b fairly informal.

once again, thanx to all of u for ur help and support. Biggrin

What did they ask and what did you tell them?

thanx lilsis, wot kinda details do u wanna no...

with regards to the Qs, as i sed they were loads! so practicly every common question was asked e.g. polygamy, inheritance, hijab, socialising without alcohol, britishness, teenage pregnancies, mixed-faith marriages etc etc. but as they were from the fire service/NHS etc, there were some interesting questions based on their jobs.

for e.g. i was asked about the Islamic stance on Disability. this lady was working in the NHS with disabled children and she sed many of the kids came from asian Muslim families and basically the mother is taking care of the chid 24/7 and would love some help offered by the NHS, but the husbands say no, that it's enough for the mother to take care of the child. this lady sed that the children were missing out on activities and 'playtime' which could stretch their abilities, something to that effect.
this caught me off guard a little as i have never been asked it before... i sed that sadly there is a cultural taboo associated to disability in the asian subcontinent and that many ppl are in denial of their child's disability, this is y they are often unwilling to accept help. i sed there is no premise for this attitude in Islam, that Muslims have a duty to care for and help such children. i sed it is understandable that some parents may be in denial, but the NHS needs to understand this and help them overcome it, i suggested that she should get in touch with an Imam and get more info from him and see if he can talk to these parents about the Islamic stance on disability, as they are likely to listen to the Imam.

another funny (edit: 'funny' was the wrong word to use here, i meant 'unusual') question i got was about polygamy but it was agen by someone from the NHS which meant the Q was more complex than the average polygamy question.
this man asked 'does a man who have more than one wife have to inform one wife about the other/s. especially considering that there could be a sexual health risk to any of the partners if one is promiscuous and has HIV (we had talked about men marrying non-muslims previously so he was referring to one of the wives being (non-religious) christian for e.g. and wot if she was promiscuous).
it was a pretty complex Qs, had to ask him to repeat it... i sed that in normal cases it is not binding on the husband to tell his each wife about the other but this is common manners and usually Adab reigns in successful relationships. but in the case that there is such a major health risk to any of them, i sed i was not sure but that i'd expect scholars to see this as an exception to the rule and make it binding on him to tell the wives. but i sed above all the husband should speak to a scholar about the situation.
and also went into the strict guidelines behind having more than one wife - that its permissable but in no way recommended and ONLY if the guy thinks he can b completely equal to all.

Well done Aasiyah!

Sounds like you have the makings of a great public speaker to do so well off the cuff like that - and with confidence!

lol I hope you weren't afraid to admit when you didn't know the answer

Did anyone approach you after the presentation and questioning with more questions?

lol thanx. i think it was my mom's magic at work. Wink if she wasnt there i probably wudnt hav been as confident. and also prior to the pres i had been praying this short du'a for when one has to do public speaking - its the du'a made by Moses (as) when he had to go speak to the Pharoah. it really made the butterflies in my stomach dissipate.

and u know how i am about stuff i dont know - i'd rather go check a million times than give a wrong answer. so yeh, i did start off with 'i'm not completely sure...' when this was the case, and mom sed it was good tht i didnt waffle on these Qs tht i was unsure about - i gave the ansers to the best of my knowledge but sed i wud check and get back to them (passed my email address to everyone).

yes, ppl did come up to me afterwards to further discuss things/ask more Qs etc. some gave me their card as they wanted to keep in touch (for e.g. the lady who worked with disabled children in the NHS and another lady who had asked me about teenage pregnancies).

IMO polygamy is a disgusting practice. Some Muslims claim that polygamy is ONLY acceptable if it is in the best interest of the orphan. B’coz men are the breadwinners and they could provide for the widow & da orphan. In those cases IMO it is acceptable but people just abuse the whole thing.

this 'disgusting practice' is something done by the Prophet (s.a.w). we cannot condemn something he (s.a.w) did, nor can we make something halaal haraam.

the way i see it, most men nowadays find it difficult to b just to one wife, let alone four and it is clear in the Quran that one should only have more than one wife if they can b just to them all. so ur right Judda, most men nowadays ignore these strict guidelines and abuse the practice.

Having a billion wives is disgusting and ridiculous, just coz Muhammad did it does not make it right! I feel really strongly about this perverted practice, its far more trouble then its worth.

most of Muhammad (s.a.w)'s wives were older than him - they were former widows with children, and former prisoners of war who accepted Islam. isnt this the very reason u gave for polygamy in ur last post?

Nah not my thing.

You appear to know a lot about Islam so answer me this question, its been bugging me for a while…
[49:12] O you who believe, you shall avoid any suspicion, for even a little bit of suspicion is sinful. You shall not spy on one another, nor shall you backbite one another; this is as abominable as eating the flesh of your dead brother. You certainly abhor this. You shall observe GOD. GOD is Redeemer, Most Merciful.
But what if u had reasons to be suspicious about that person?

yea and y cant women go on hajj without a mehram?

y do u always quote stuff from submission.org, i thought u sed u dont agree with them?

theyv changed the translation of that verse!

here's the mainstream translation by Yusuf Ali:
49:12 O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin: And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, ye would abhor it...But fear Allah. For Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

and by Pickthall:
49:12 O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful.

here's the arabic transliteration of the part of the ayah ur referring to:
ijtanibu katheeran min aZanni inna ba'ad aZanni ithmun

as u know arabic, u wud c the difference between that^ and wot submission.org translated it as.

If the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) approved of something, he was allowed to approve i first.

Judda think before you post.
