My Sheikh, Your Sheikh, Let's Go Have a Milkshake

As'salaamu 'alaykum folks

I found this article insightful and pertinent. (For those with limited attention spans: its a tad long)

My Sheikh, Your Sheikh, Let's Go Have a Milkshake
By Altaf Husain

You know the drama all too well. Perhaps you have been an actor in the drama or a silent observer or, dare we say, the instigator. With variations in the actual script of the drama, the all-too-familiar scene could unfold like this: A group of sincere Muslims have gathered to worship Allah Almighty. They are preparing to pray and then, after prayer, they will head out to a restaurant for dinner.

SCENE 1

Sincere Muslim #1: Wait, did I just see you put water on your socks?

Vandals hit French Muslim graves

Vandals hit French Muslim graves

The graves of as many as 500 Muslim war veterans have been vandalised in northern France, in an attack President Nicolas Sarkozy said was "repugnant".

Gravestones were daubed with swastikas and letters spelling out anti-Islamic slogans at France's biggest military graveyard near Arras in the north-east.

The attack took place on the eve of Islam's Eid al-Adha festival, when Muslims visit the graves of loved ones.

Dozens of police searched the graveyard on Monday as an investigation began.

It is the third time the Muslim sector of the Notre Dame de Lorette cemetery has been attacked.

Is being cruel to be kind bad manners?

As'salaamu 'alaykum,

Mukhlid ibn al-Husain (ra) once said,
'We are more in need of acquiring adab than learning Hadith'

Having adab encompases all the good traits and character that we, as muslims, must develop and kindle within ourselves and within our lives. Everything from eating, to greeting and interacting with others.

So, we are asked not to be undeservedly harsh with others, and develop a character of mercy and kindness. Should we always use a gentle approach? But when is a soft approach required with others? When is (or should) a hard approach required? Do not some situations require you to be hard? Is being hard on others indicative of (our) lack of adab?

An integrated Citizen

As'salaamu 'alaykum,

A common complaint against the muslim community is that we lack integration in common society. I do not agree with this notion, but I do recognise that we could do more. What I would like to know is how integrated you feel you are with your own community. I do not mean hanging around with your muslim/non-muslim chums, but becoming agents of change, being involved, participating, and playing a greater role strengthening community relations. Becoming a school governor, community support officer, media savvy, etc

It takes effort to become actively involved in your community, and making positive contibutions, but I feel that this is a road that we have not fully considered travelling upon or developed to any significant level.

Is it coz I is Muslim?
Talking Fisher-Price doll accused of promoting Islam
By Matthew Moore, Telegraph

A talking Fisher-Price doll that sounds like it is saying "Islam is the Light" has been described as inappropriate by parents.

The Fisher-Price Little Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo is meant to make realistic baby sounds and occasionally cry out for its "mama".

But some parents claim that one of its noises sounds just like "Islam is the Light", and have complained to Mattel, which owns Fisher-Price.

BNP gain 69,000 votes in London
BNP wins seat in London Assembly

The anti-immigration British National Party has won a seat on the London Assembly after getting 5.3% of votes.

Richard Barnbrook, who is BNP leader on Barking and Dagenham Council and who came fifth in the mayoral contest, will take up one of the 25 assembly seats.

He said he would stand up for Londoners regardless of "colour or identity" as long they fitted in "to the environment they come into".

But critics said it was a victory for "hatred, violence and stupidity".

London voters elected 14 of the London Assembly members directly, with the remaining 11 divided between the parties in proportion to London-wide votes.

Dentist guilty in headscarf row

A dentist in Greater Manchester refused to treat a female Muslim patient unless she wore an Islamic headscarf, a disciplinary panel has heard.
Dr Omer Butt told the woman she could not register at his Bury practice unless she covered her hair, the Professional Conduct Committee heard.

The committee heard the patient was left "humiliated and upset" but agreed as she wanted treatment for toothache.

Dr Butt denies refusing to treat the woman unless she wore a headscarf.

He said that part of their practice was for women who came to the practice to wear headscarves

Man Love
Man Love!

Here in the West when a man expresses his love for another man it is usually looked upon disapprovingly and suggestions of homosexuality are insinuated. However, it is fair to say that in most "eastern" traditions men can have very intimate relationships and homosexualuality will not even occur to them. The archetype for this type of relationship is that of Rumi and Shams al-Tabriz although the common factor for their love was the Love of the Divine which is what ultimately bound them to one another.
