Sun, Sand and Slavery

So who's planning a lovely holiday to Dubai this year?

This article is a little long but I think it is really worth reading.

If you drive along the al-Ain highway you pass mile after mile of signs marking the location of what will soon be known as Dubailand.

To KILT a Mockingbird

Asssalamu alaikum w.w.

I am a Muslim. My cultural background is Scottish.

My family expect me to wear a kilt and certain special occasions, and when I get married, insha'Allah, they would be really upset if I didn't wear one.

However, I am aware that the kilt doesn't cover the 'auror' because it is above the knee:

So, what do I do. Is it such a bad sin, because as you can see it is not really 'immodest' clothes.

INSOMNIA

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu,
Has anyone here ever suffered from insomnia??
Lying in bed for hours upon hours staring at the streetlight projected onto your ceiling, or counting one sheep after another hopping endlessly over an imaginary fence? Have you ever been to work, school, university or your A.A. Meeting (!) having not had one winks' shut-eye, let alone forty?
Has this been because of specific worries or stressful episodes in your life? Have you come out of these periods of sleeplessness and can you now tuck yourself into bed comfortably after Isha, confident in the knowledge that in only a matter of moments you will be safely drifting into the Land of Nod?

Queries Regarding Prophet Noah (Alaih Assalaam)

assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu,

As a convert to Islam, much of my understanding of the earlier Prophets are informed through Christian and Jewish teachings (although I was a staunch atheist, I was reasonably familiar with many of the famous stories).

This has been very useful to me since becoming Muslim, firstly because I didn't have loads of 'new' history to learn, and also because we believe that the Qu'ran was sent to confirm and correct the previous Books of God (swt).

I have recently come into a spot of bother regarding the story of the Prophet Noah [Nuh] (as) , as

They vanish quietly and quickly. Some are dragged from their beds in front of their terrified families. Others are hustled off the streets into a waiting van, or yanked from a bus at a lonely desert junction. A windowless world of sweat and fear awaits. In dark cells, nameless men bark questions. The men brandish rubber whips, clenched fists, whirring electric drills, pictures of Osama bin Laden.

Invitation to Invention

From coffee to cheques and the three-course meal, the Muslim world has given us many innovations that we take for granted in daily life. As a new exhibition opens, Paul Vallely nominates 20 of the most influential- and identifies the men of genius behind them.

Seeking knowledge through travel

assalmu alaikum w.w.

I'm sure most of you are aware of the hadith that says the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said "Seek knowledge, even as far away as China."

Well I'm not planning to go THAT far (yet), but i am going to Syria on Wednesday insha'Allah! im very excited now, I'm going with a Syrian brother, and I'm staying family in Aleppo for 5 nights then with some Singaporean students in Damascus for 5 nights.

I was wondering if anyone here has been and can recommend anywhere in particular to visit...
