Issue 13

In This Issue:

All Muslims know that alcohol is Haram (forbidden). Even if they do actually drink themselves, they know they are committing a sin. But the same is not always true of cannabis. "Man made beer, God made weed. I know who I trust," is what they might say. "It doesn't have any bad side-effects, it helps me relax and when I'm smoking I think really deeply about things." Is there any truth to these statements? Is weed really a harmless drug? Shouldn't the government legalise it? Didn't they already make it legal a couple of years ago? Is cannabis even forbidden in Islam?
The Story of One Man's Journey from Weed to Islam By Abdullah bin Islam Yes, I've smoked weed. I've blazed white widow, purple haze and terrible home-grown. I've had bongs, hot-boxes and I've pulled whiteys. I've bought Ounces, Henry's and a few mint leaves wrapped in a load of tinfoil. I've taken exams while high. I've sat down on the side of the road at the dead of night, trying to get control of my balance so I can get home and sneak upstairs without waking my parents. I've trekked halfway across London to pick up a tens, because all my regular dealers had ran out because it was Notting Hill Carnival weekend. I've boasted about being high-grade and looked down on people who couldn't smoke more than one spliff without their face turning green.
By Adnan Adrees Marriage in Islam is the tranquillity of the soul, peace of mind and the recognition that there's someone equally as weird as you. Where a man and a woman can live together in an atmosphere of love, harmony, mutual advice and tolerance of the mother-in-law. Of course things can get complicated (not to mention weird and awkward) when you’re being encouraged to marry your cousin. Up until now you’ve been like brother and sister, but now you’re being asked to be “more” than that. Can such a relationship really be allowed? So what’s the Islamic position?
The alarm on my Nokia went off. I turned over and glanced at the clock: 4:15am. Time for Suhur. I dragged myself out of bed so that I wouldn’t drop off back to sleep. With blurry eyes, I put on my dressing gown and made my way downstairs...
The belief in the Day of Judgement is part of our Aqeedah (creed) and is something which will definitely happen. Allah (swt) has warned us about it many times in the Qur’an, He says, “Verily, the Hour (Day of Judgement) is surely coming, there is no doubt about it, yet most men believe not. [Qur’an 40:59].
By Sajid Iqbal & Zahid Maqbool Ali takes Jamal with him to speak to his Dad about marriage... Ali: Salaam Pops... how ya doin? This is Jamal. Ali's Dad: Wa Alay Kum Salaam Ali. Did you bring me my Rusk biscuits? My milky tea is getting cold! Ali: No Pop... I didn't, but I need to chat with you about summat serious... Ali's Dad: NO! You cannot be on my car insurance! Ali: Chill Dad, it’s more serious. Ali's Dad: What! You want the remote control? Ali: Nah... even more serious. Ali's Dad: What!!?? Ali: Pops... I wanna... err… get married.
By Jannah As-Sabil Who do you aspire and look up to? What kind of person do you want to become? Ask yourself these questions with a sincere mind. Is it the wannabe gangsters on the street? The Hollywood or Bollywood stars? The Kings of Rap? Think for a moment. Are these role models going to lead you on a path to success in this life and in the Hereafter? “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much” [Qur’an 33:21]
"Don't go to that mosque, they're Wahabbi”. “I don't give Salaam to Deobandis”. “You can’t pray behind Brelwis”. “Sufis are dodgy man!” “Those Salafis insult the Prophet (pbuh)!” “They're all Bid'ati, they're all going to hell”. “That group is Mushrik, stay away from them”. “Shias are all Kafir!”

By Zulfi Bukhari CEO MPACUK This September a new intake of Muslim students will head towards the brave new world of university and they will be greeted by lurid newspaper headlines stating “Muslim Extremism on Campus!” and “Campus of Terror!” These stories will all be published within fresher’s week and will run in most of the national newspapers. How do I know this? Because this is what happened last year, and the year before and the one before that too.
Select messages received by the Editor Hello I read the article you wrote on sexual abuse... I was abused and... reading the article really helped me, knowing that I was not the only one to go through it and there where others, who are Muslim just like myself, who have been through it. I hope you will keep mentioning abuse... as most Muslims, especially the older generation, are not really aware of this. It can happen anywhere... and to anyone. Thank you Aisha Bradford Salaam
By Adnan Adrees & Dawud Qadri It was the night when hope was once again rekindled as the beast did stir; for all his villainies a masked avenger tore through him with bloody execution. The game had just begun and the pieces were moving into place. The chamber was bathed in darkness as flames danced in the fireplace illuminating three figures sat at a table. No one spoke as Malchior walked in and took his place at the table. The ministerial boardroom was a windowless chamber which gave off an ageless aura. Malchior surveyed his fellow ministers before glancing to his left where an ornate mirror hung upon the wall but bore no reflection.
Baba Ali (real name Ali Ardekani) has become an Internet phenomenon. He is the co-founder of Ummah Films, and his series of videos on YouTube, 'The Reminder' and 'Ask Baba Ali', have been watched by hundreds of thousands of people. Ummah Films seems to use entertainment to reach out to the masses who usually do not attend lectures or services at the mosques to learn about Islam. Baba Ali can now be seen on the Islam Channel and has been a guest at many Islamic conferences around the world. The Revival caught up with him at a recent event for an exclusive interview... So how did you get the idea for Ummah Films?
Q. Is your Wudhu or Ghusl accepted when you have human hair extension weaved in your hair? Answer by Shaykh Salim Giza A. In the name of Allah the Most Beneficent and Merciful. Wudhu or Ghusl is accepted when a person has human hair extensions as long all the obligations are fulfilled. The four obligations for Wudhu, according to the Hanafi Madhab, are: 1. Washing the whole face once 2. Washing both of the hands/arms up to and including the elbows once 3. Wiping one quarter of the head with wet fingers 4. Washing both feet up to and including the ankles once The three obligations for Ghusl, according to the Hanafi Madhab, are: 1. Washing the whole of the body, head to toe, once so no part is left dry
Q. So much is said these days about the rights parents have over their children, but what rights do children have over their parents and what protections and duties do their parents owe them? A. In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent and Merciful. As with all humans, each person has some sort of rights, and children are no exception. Children are an Amana (trust) which are given to parents to look after and bring up with the best of their abilities. If brought up correctly, children are a joy and their blessings bring sustenance, mercy and an abundance of reward. Allah says: ‘Wealth and Sons are allurements (joys) of the life of this world…’[Quran 18:46]
There are many words we read and hear but aren’t too sure what they mean. So The Revival attempts to define some Islamic terms used in this issue: Ansar - means the 'Helpers.' They are the Muslims of Madina who helped the Muhajireen (immigrants) of Makka in the process of settling down in the new environment in Madina. Fitnah - trial or tribulation; also refers to any period of disorder or the period of time before the end of the world or any civil strife. Istighfar – to ask the forgiveness of Allah (swt), especially by saying, ‘Astaghfiru’llah’ (I seek the forgiveness of Allah (swt))
If you wanna get the best out of Ramadan and achieve its purpose which is to gain Taqwa (God-Consciousness) then instead of 'killing time' here are some important things to do every day in Ramadan: SALAH (Prayer) Five daily prayers - Try to read them in congregation (Jamaat) if possible. If you don't normally pray then this is the best month to start. Qadah Salah (Missed Prayers) - Try to make up for as many missed Salah as possible i.e. all those you have missed over the years!Try reading Qadah Salah after each prayer if you can.

Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.

Through cheating, stealing, and lying, one may get required results but finally one becomes

Asalaam alaykum brothers and sisters,

Hope you are all in good health and iman.

I have read this magazine and thought that it was informative, clear and concise: However, I wanted to draw your attention to how the magazine can be improved, insh'Allah:-

1). Carry out an online survey so that everyone can take part on how they can improve it or put this in the magazine itself.

2). Make a section where the brothers and sisters can design their own ideal magazine and the one that gets picked-wins.

3). I thought that the pages used alot of information on too many pages so you have to consider who your audiences are: Youth - 11 to 15 years old
15-20 years old

4). You could try to find out what topics or issues are important for the youth to know by carrying out a questionnaire? For example, carry out a street survey with questions such as:

Tick the one that most applies to you

a). Which way do you wear your hijaab or thinking of wearing a hijaab? How to wear the Hijaab appropriately,

These are all ideas but what I have noticed is that majority of the information are focussed on topics ssuch as Weed and etc.

Asalaam alaykum

Salam Alaykum, Maryam, mybe you should come and introduce yourself on the New Members Thread. Good suggestions you've made there. But isn't there already a page about emails and comments? You know, maybe not to you at this point in time, Weed is pretty relevant today.
