The Box with the Moving Picture

Sup,

We all have TVs in our houses, some have one in every room

We spend about on average 8 hours a day watching it.

It would be ignorant to say it doesnt affect us in any way.

But is its effects possitive or negative?

Do the pros out weigh the cons?

whats YOUR views on the box with the moving pictures (AKA the TV)

I dont watch the tele, b4 i used to sit on it wastin my time for hours with pointless dramas/soaps..if i do watch tele its only to do with news/interestin programmes which have a point cuz personally i think the tele distracts you from namaz and rememberance of Allah (swt) also i think it gives satan and easy way of keepin you away frm thougths of Allah (swt)..i am not an extremist but i think the tele is a total waste of time when it comes to watchin pointless programmes that have no meanin, call it learnin from experience!!

TV is important

depending on how we use it

we get two extremes

one who say its TOTALLY wrong

the others who say it is perfect and VITAL for educational puposes

answer lies between the two extremes

calm down

i never said it was vital

i said answer lies between the two extremes

Tv's main function is simply to entertain (AKA pass time).

If i want news i'll check it on the internet.

I watch Tv a little, but it doesnt stop me from doing other things. Simply because we have one doesnt mean that we will mis-use it nor should any1 else.

I still manage to prayers, read books, sports etc. Mostly only watch it in the evening when im too tired 2 do anythng else.

Teletubbies are just stupid, they talk in jibberish and have you noticed they dont wear clothes... what kind of messed up world do you live in where we show kids this crap.

But i grew up watching Sesame Street coz ur supposed to learn how to count and spell but now that i was watching it as an adult i realised Sesame Street teaches kids other things too; like how to judge people and label people. For instance they've got a character on there called Oscar and they treat this guy like shit thru the entire show.
Presenter: "Oscar, you are soo mean! Isn't he kids?"
Kids: "Yeah Oscar your a grouch"
Oscar lives in a trash can for pete sake. Then you wonder why you grow old and step over homeless people
"Get it togeather you grouch!Get a job grouch!"
So dont be telling me how to get to Sesame Street i wouldn't go there even if i knw the way. Who'd want to live there with six foot pidgeons walking around, an elephant thats a junkie, then theres that cookie monster whose addicted to cookies going "cookie cookie cookie cookie" all the damn time. I dont wanna knw what kind of cookie hes talking about coz chocolate-chip certainly dont do that to people.

I wouldnt let my kids watch that.

no way, EIGHT hours!! thats like half of the time we spend awake!! so i ges i'm glad to say that i have never had a tele in my house, ever... as kids we grew up reading, playing outside, on the computer, anything BUT the tv. and seeing as how this has only been beneficial for me, i feel the tele has more cons than pros - the quicker u get rid of it the better people.

good points yashmaki!

I NEVER WORE IT BECAUSE OF THE TALIBAN, MOTHER. I LIKE THE MODESTY AND PROTECTION IT AFFORDS ME FROM THE EYES OF MEN.

i used to watch the regular soaps u know eastenders...corrie etc
but i am sooo glad to say that iv realised what a waste of time it is and plus like yashmaki said these people that we see on the tv screens have no sense of modesty or hijab so why should we waste our time watching them do sinful things and consequently sin ourselves...so yes i think tv can definitely have a bad bad influence...it distracts you from everything else...e.g. when mums calling and you only manage to hear a mumbled voice after the tenth call!...its not right!!!

but on the other hand i also think that the tv can be used as an educational tool e.g. watching Islamic lectures/naaths/nasheeds...but thats all i ever watch

Average of 8 hours?! Where d'you get that from?!!

I think its possible to get hooked on television but although we've got one in our house, I'm glad to say its hardly ever on. We even stopped my little sis watching childrens' programmes...you wont believe some of the fitnah that is on there now.

Personally, I watch on average a couple of hours a week and thats just football. Granted the players' attire doesnt strictly comply with shariah limitations but at least its better than holly/bollywood.

That'd be Sesame Street.

I’d watch a lot more TV if there were anything worth watching.

I watch the news repeatedly; channel 4’s 12pm and 7pm are the best. Sky News and ITV are the worst.

As lilsis said, it depends on how you use the TV. These are some interesting documentaries that are well worth viewing, some great films etc.

If people choose to watch rubbish, they should not be surprised that their brain turns into mush.

I just think they're Insulting to a childs intelligence and will most likely do more damage to a kids development than any good.

I remember reading somewhere that kids were begin to imitate the Teletubbies and im talking speech wise. So kids aren't gonna start talking in English no sir, they'll be talking Teletubbish.
Next thing you know the nations split into people wearing Red, Blue, Green and yellow.

You dont understand, if you continue to expose them to such things then wont they start to think that talking in such a way is the norm?

Irrefutable evidence that the Teletubbies are infact EVIL.

EDIT: I didn't realise there was some rude stuff on the link I posted.

I was actually looking for a site which had the Teletubbies waving Nazi flags and wearing Nazi armbands etc. If I find it I'll post it in the jokes thread.

I dont call that irrefutable... and i wouldnt go as far as claiming they're evil. I know evil when i see it.
Teletubbies are plain stupid and rubbish.

And now you never will.

Any programme that has a bad message/abusive lingo is likey to affect a person at some stage..

Salaams

I think TV can be watched but it depends on what you watch.
If you watch nature programmes, educational programmes than thats ok. Sport is also ok to watch.

It is certainly good for watching Islamic lectures and you will be rewarded. I watch videos of Sheikh ul Islam Dr. Muhammed Tahir-ul-Qadri and I think that his DVD called 'Milad un Nabi' is excellent and is very informative.

Childrens programmes are good but be cautious that they don't watch bad adverts. You can also now get Islamic cartoons and programmes and those would be better to be buy.

Children and adults should both not watch too much because it is bad for your eyes and makes you tired and its not healthy sitting in one place for too long.

TV now is getting bad and can sometimes be quite obscene and I think TV can be one of Satan's weapon like the radio but they can also be for your advantages. It depends.

We should also not listen to bad rap music with swearing and that based on not very nice things and not those music videos either.

You can now even get Islamic rap and other really nice nasheeds by people like Yusuf Islam and Sami Yusuf people should listen to that.

The other thing that drives me up the wall are Bolly flicks. Now dont get me wrong i aint saying ive never seen them oh i've seen them alright, i've been watching since i was a kid. The thing that bothers me is that parents never actually explain to the kids that this is "make believe" as in its not how things are done in real life.

Now i grew till the age of 10 thinking this is how it happens like in the movies. Boy meets girl, they have a song and a dance, background music plays outta nowhere comes 10 random people all doing the same dance moves dressed in a similar fashion.

Its gotta be confusing. Kids grow up watching these flicks and no one tells them this aint how its done, thats its ake believe... like peter pan. After watching such things ofcourse they're gonna imitate, ofcourse they're gonna impliment it. Parents need to make a stance on Bolly Flicks and explain that firstly its not real (i only figoured that out after seeing some guy jump 10 stories off a building and survive. I dont care how much Weetabix he ate that s*** aint natural.) secondly i think Bolly Flicks should come with an age certificate coz some of them are getting really dodgy.
