Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts
Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts

Turkey is preparing to publish a document that represents a revolutionary reinterpretation of Islam - and a controversial and radical modernisation of the religion.

The country's powerful Department of Religious Affairs has commissioned a team of theologians at Ankara University to carry out a fundamental revision of the Hadith, the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.

The Hadith is a collection of thousands of sayings reputed to come from the Prophet Muhammad.

Pakistan Blocks YouTube
Pakistan blocks YouTube website

Pakistan has blocked access to the popular YouTube website because of content deemed offensive to Islam.

Its telecommunications authority ordered internet service providers to block the site until further notice.

Reports said the content included Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that have outraged many.

But one report said a trailer for a forthcoming film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, which portrays Islam in a negative light, was behind the ban.

Good job hunting.

Feature: Private Messages

Salaam

I thought it is a good idea to toot my own horn. So lets talk Private messages. This should be massively better than what we had before. New features:

 • Search usernames as you type - matching usernames will show in the "to:" box.
 • Send to multiple members.
 • Unlimited messages - You may even have access to some messages thought lost long ago!
 • Threading. This should make it easier to follow the conversation.
 • Block messages - You an now block users from sending you messages! Ideal when trying to ignore the existence of another member.
 • contacts list - a list of members you have previously sent messages to.
 • Recycle bin - A safety step before deletion.

Kosovo's parliament has unanimously endorsed a declaration of independence from Serbia, in an historic session.

The declaration, read by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, said Kosovo would be a democratic country that respected the rights of all ethnic communities.

The US and a number of EU countries are expected to recognise Kosovo on Monday.

Serbia's PM denounced the US for helping create a "false state". Serbia's ally, Russia, called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting.

Correspondents say the potential for trouble between Kosovo's Serbs and ethnic Albanians is enormous.

Five students win terror appeal
Five students win terror appeal

The convictions of five young Muslim men jailed over extremist literature have been quashed by the Appeal Court.

Freeing the men, the Lord Chief Justice said their convictions for downloading extremist propaganda were unsafe as there was no proof of terrorist intent.

A jury convicted the students in 2007 after hearing they had become obsessed with jihadi websites and literature.

The men, of Bradford and Ilford, east London, said they were overjoyed and their trial should never have happened.

Is (More) stop and search a good idea?
Is stop and search a good idea?

Prime Minister Gordon Brown plans to give police the power to stop and search people without giving a reason, the BBC understands.

The suggestion was mooted by Tory leader David Cameron to reduce violent crime, but what do people in Brixton, south London, think?

"Skunk weed, Skunk weed!"

That's what the teenage boys leaning casually against the front of a fast food restaurant say.

Some make this drug offer in a conspiratorial whisper to passers-by.

The more confident members of the group are more open, projecting their vo
