Yemeni describes CIA secret jails

A Yemeni man has described being held for nearly three years in secret CIA prisons, or "black sites", around the world and accused the US of torture.

Khaled al-Maqtari told Amnesty International he was held in isolation for more than 28 months without charge or access to any legal representation.

He said he first became a US "ghost detainee" at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq after being arrested there in 2004.

The US has not acknowledged detaining Mr Maqtari.

Al Jazeera English

Anyone watch this?

Just had it on for a few minutes. Was professionally done.

The show was also interesting. "Witness" with Rageh Omar - this particular ep about two friends who were brought up in Bosnia. One a Muslim, the other a Serb.

I was surprised at how the Serb guy thought calling his friend was deeply offensive and wished he had not done it (No idea if he actually was Muslim - his dad was, his mother probably was not.).

You were either a Muslim or a Serb.

At least 50 people in southern India have damaged their sight by staring at the sun in the hope of seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary, doctors say.

Fears for 2,000 'missing' pupils

More than 2,000 children are missing from school registers, a committee of MPs investigating the issue of forced marriages has been told.

The Home Affairs Select Committee demanded the information after hearing that 33 youngsters were missing from education in Bradford.

Members suspected some of the children may have been taken abroad and forced to marry against their will.

Pupils 'to take allegiance oath'

School-leavers should be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to Queen and country, says a report commissioned by Gordon Brown on British citizenship.

Report author, ex-attorney general Lord Goldsmith, says it would give teenagers a sense of belonging.

Council tax and student fee rebates are suggested for people who volunteer - as well as a "Britishness" public holiday.

School is 'the last moral force'

Poor parenting and the erosion of family life are leaving schools as the only moral framework in many children's lives, says a head teachers' leader.

Schools were increasingly expected to "fill the vacuum", John Dunford told the Association of School and College Leaders annual conference, in Brighton.

They now sometimes had to teach social skills such as eating a meal together.

An interesting news report:
]

Licence to lie for Italian women

Italy's highest appeal court has ruled that married Italian women who commit adultery are entitled to lie about it to protect their honour.

The court gave its landmark ruling after hearing the case of a 48-year-old woman, convicted of giving false testimony to police by denying she had lent her mobile phone to her lover.

The appeal court did not agree that she had broken the law.
