Al-Azhar okays controversial book about Prophet Mohammed
Book, published in 1837 by Reverend George Bush, portrays Prophet Mohammed as 'imposter'.
The highest authority in Sunni Islam approved a book describing the Prophet as an "imposter" and Muslims as "locusts" that the Egyptian press continued Friday to attribute to the US president's great grandfather despite denials from Washington.
"The Al-Azhar Institute for Islamic Studies approved the book titled 'The Life of Mohammed, founder of the religion of Islam and of the Empire of the Saracens'," Egyptian newspapers announced on their front pages.
The book was published in 1837 by Reverend George Bush, whom Egyptian newspapers - including state-owned publications - have consistently presented as the current US president's great-grandfather.
But the government-run Al-Ahram daily said it had approved the book's publication "because it is a piece of documentation that paints a lively picture of the life of Prophet Mohammed."
Publication of Reverend Bush's work had initially been rejected by Al-Azhar and the turnaround puts an end to a year-long controversy.
An unnamed Al-Azhar official quoted in the official Al-Akhbar daily denied rumours that the publication was the result of US pressure.
"Al-Azhar does not bow to any pressure, whether foreign or local, when it comes to matters related to Islam," the cleric said.

Wife killed 'over cyber affair'
A husband stabbed his wife 10 times after he found out she was having a "cyber relationship" with another man, the Old Bailey has heard.
Aygul Dogan, 23, from Stoke Newington, begged her husband Kemal Dogan, 35, to forgive her after he found her baring her body on the web, the jury heard.
On their way home, Mr Dogan allegedly told his wife her life was at an end.
Mr Dogan, who was infertile, denies his wife's murder in December 2005 on the grounds of diminished responsibility
The couple, from Stamford Hill, north London, married in their native Turkey in 1997 but had no children, apparently because of his infertility, Brian O'Neill, prosecuting, said.
He said: "In the weeks leading up to the night when his wife was killed this factor appears to have begun to become a strain upon their relationship.

Muslim patients' beds face Mecca
A hospital has confirmed it has implemented a system which requires staff to turn the beds of some Muslim patients to face Mecca.
Other changes at Dewsbury and District Hospital, west Yorkshire, include providing halal meal options and shower facilities.
Staff at the hospital are taking part in training sessions to teach them how to help patients uphold the Islamic faith on a daily basis.
A spokeswoman for the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said it had made the changes and introduced the training to better meet the needs of their Muslim patients. This included staff positioning the beds of "very ill" Muslim patients to face the Qibla in Mecca if requested.
The training sessions were introduced after Catherine Briggs, matron at the hospital, spoke to Muslim patients about how staff could improve their service.
Mrs Briggs said: "We are committed to providing the highest possible standards of care to every one of our patients and we know that Dewsbury and District Hospital treats a high number of patients from the Muslim community.
"We always do our best to listen to our patients and are willing to adapt our nursing practices where possible to help patients uphold their cultural beliefs."

If you're a reasonable person then you will understand that in a hospital in Dewsbury a seriously ill Muslim patient can have his or her bed turned towards Mecca:
But if you don't like Muslims then all nurses up and down the country have been ordered to turn the beds of all Muslim patients to face Mecca five times a day:

Wife in arranged marriage staged own kidnapping to extort £300,000 from husband to give to lover
A businessman's wife was jailed yesterday after staging her own kidnap in a plot to extort £300,000 from him and spend it with her secret lover.
Hina Uroog, 26, disappeared after taking her children to school and that evening her husband, Sajad Ali, received a phone call from her "abductor".
He could hear his wife apparently pleading for her life in the background, and 34-year-old Mr Ali agreed to pay a ransom.
But in reality Uroog was with her lover, Kashif Ahmed, and she was never in any danger.
The plot was exposed after Mr Ali contacted police, who swooped on Ahmed as he arrived to hand over the hostage and pick up the money, armed with a pistol and a sawn-off shotgun.
Officers became suspicious when Uroog started dismantling her mobile phone and trying to eat the SIM card.
They later found a video on another phone of the pair having sex.
Uroog, her lover and their accomplice were jailed for a total of more than 20 years at Manchester Crown Court.
But despite his wife's admission of what a judge called her "dreadful betrayal", Mr Ali, from Rochdale, insisted he had forgiven her and was standing by her

A number of schools across the UK are starting to serve only halaal meat in their school canteens, much to the disgust of some parents and members of staff who consider it a imhumane way to kill an animal.
My school - which consists predominately of non Muslims has also started this initiative (its just cheaper that way).
Only today, the cook asked me if I'd like, shepards pie, chicken curry, lamb burger, chicken nuggets or a sausage...cos its all 'halul' - only for me to select the fish....
Its intresting to note how difficult it is to economically cater for the needs of both muslim and non muslim kids...

well I don't see why it should be...non-Muslims shouldn't have anything against eating halal meat (unless they're vegetarian but then they'd be against ALL meat); they don't give 2 craps about the treatment of their animals: just look at the chicken documentary last night..
the only people who could possibly object to having halal meat are doing so purely because it is 'Muslim' and they are Islamophobic people, there is no other logical reason.
