Love for God is that flame which, when it blazes, burns away everything except God.
Love for God is a sword which cuts down all that is not God.
God alone is eternal, all else will vanish.

Beloved,
Take away what I want
Take away what I do
Take away what I need
Take away everything that takes me away from You.

When you're not here, I can't go to sleep.

Praise God for those two insomnias!
And the difference between them.”

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

“A shadow cannot ignore the sun that all day creates and moves it.”

Theres quite a few books on his poetry. Shudnt be too difficult to find.

You amuse me with your touch
although I can’t see your hands.
You have kissed me with tenderness
although I haven’t seen your lips
You are hidden from me.

But it is you who keeps me alive

Perhaps the time will come
when you will tire of kisses
I shall be happy
even for insults from you
I only ask that you
keep some attention on me.

Prophets and religious leaders are like signs on the road to guide spiritual travellers who have become lost in the desert. But those who have attained union with God need nothing but their inner eye and divine lamp of faith, they need no signs or even a road to travel along...such people then become signs for others...

I am a bird of the heavenly garden,
I belong not to the earthly sphere,
They have made for two or three days,
A cage of my body.

Salaam,

I can’t say that I have the spiritual depth to understand the connotations of what most of you have written here...

To be honest, I had never really understood or appreciated his poetry until I came across the succinct wisdom of the following verse of his:

(To put it into context:
From a religious point of view, I knew about the spiritual heights to which man could ascend and the depths to which he could descend.
Yet how could man be capable of doing both these things? Man could sin, I understood that, but how could he ever hope to be ranked with the Angels; for they are sinless. How could man ever hope to be more virtuous than them?
Following on from that idea, why then should man feel degraded if he/she gives into the desires of his lower-self (nafs) and sins, why is that so bad in the eyes of our Lord...?
This is a complex questions which would require much explanation. Yet the genius of Rumi condenses the core argument (concerning the Justice of our Lord) to a few lines of poetry)

Quote:
"Verily, the most High Lord created the Angels
and set Reason in them,
And He created the Beasts
and set Desire in them,
And He created the Sons of Adam
and set in them Reason and Desire:
For he whose Reason prevails Over his Desire,
he is Higher than Angels,
And he whose Desire prevails Over his Reason,
he is Lower than the Beasts."

May peace be blessed upon you.

"Seek and you shall find."

One night a man was crying,
Allah! Allah!
His lips grew sweet with the praising,
until a cynic said,
"So! I have heard you
calling out but have you ever
gotten any response?"

The man had no answer to that.
He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.

He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,
in the thick, green foliage.
"Why did you stop praising?"
"Because I've never heard anything back."
"This longing
you express is the return message."

The grief you cry out from
draws you toward union.

Your pure sadness
that wants help
is the secret cup.
Listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.

There are love dogs
no one knows the names of.

Give your life
to be one of them.

-Rumi

The relationship between God and man is an intimate web of discourse that unfolds itself with each event of our life.

The more you seek Him, the more He seeks you

I tried to find Him on the Christian cross, but He
was not there; I went to the Temple of the
Hindus and to the old pagodas, but I could not
find a trace of Him anywhere.

I searched on the mountains and in the valleys
but neither in the heights nor in the depths was I
able to find Him. I went to the Ka'bah in Mecca,
but He was not there either.

I questioned the scholars and philosophers but
He was beyond their understanding.

I then looked into my heart and it was there
where He dwelled that I saw Him; He was
nowhere else to be found.

Rumi

^^love that.

Hardship may dishearten at first,
but every hardship passes away.
All despair is followed by hope,
all darkness is followed by sunshine.

Nice.

The sweetness of hardship is that...its usually then that one restores and revives their relationship with Allah (swt).

God is found in difficult times.

The wakefulness of this world is actually a deep sleep:

He who is awake (in this world) is actually more asleep,
His wakefulness is worse than his normal peaceful sleep.
When our souls aren't awak to God's wonderful Presence,
We are awake yet in a prison,
without an active essence.

I kiss the ground:

In the memory of thy lips, the red diamond of my ring I kiss,
Since I cannot reach thy lips, I kiss this.
As I have no access to Your sky (your height),
I prostrate myself down and this earth I kiss.

I asked Allah to take away my habit. Allah said, No. It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked Allah to make my handicapped child whole. Allah said, No. His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary

I asked Allah to grant me patience. Allah said, No. Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned.

I asked Allah to give me happiness. Allah said, No. I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked Allah to spare me pain. Allah said, No. Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked Allah to make my spirit grow. Allah said, No. You must grow on your own! , but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked Allah for all things that I might enjoy life. Allah said, No. I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I ask Allah to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me. Allah said...Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters, and who are they?

I never said it was Rumi, since we're on the subject of poetry I thought I'd share it with everyone.

Well this place it truly a maze to you Wink

(we have another topic for general poetry somewhere...)

Greed Kills Knowledge

Lack of self-greed makes an ignorant man wise,
While the excess of ego leads knowledge to demise.

Spiritual filth can be cleaned by tears

This outer dirt can be washed away with water and rain,
Yet the inner dirt shall remain.
However, when the inner dirt appears,
It can only be washed away with your tears

STAY CLOSE, MY HEART

Stay close, my heart, to the one who knows your ways;
Come into the shade of the tree that allays has fresh flowers.
Don't stroll idly through the bazaar of the perfume-markers:
Stay in the shop of the sugar-seller.
If you don't find true balance, anyone can deceive you;
Anyone can trick out of a thing of straw,
And make you take it for gold
Don't squat with a bowl before every boiling pot;
In each pot on the fire you find very different things.
Not all sugarcanes have sugar, not all abysses a peak;
Not all eyes possess vision, not every sea is full of pearls.
O nightingale, with your voice of dark honey! Go on lamenting!
Only your drunken ecstasy can pierce the rock's hard heart!
Surrender yourself, and if you cannot be welcomed by the Friend,
Know that you are rebelling inwardly like a thread
That doesn't want to go through the needle's eye!
The awakened heart is a lamp; protect it by the him of your robe!
Hurry and get out of this wind, for the weather is bad.
And when you've left this storm, you will come to a fountain;
You'll find a Friend there who will always nourish your soul.
And with your soul always green, you'll grow into a tall tree
Flowering always with sweet light-fruit, whose growth is interior.

(I understand majority of it but need some parts of it explained by sis but nonetheless an excellent piece of work!)

nicked it off another forum!

The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for You,
not knowing
how blind that I was

Lovers don't finally meet somewhere
They're in each other all along.

Rumi

I DIED a hundred times and I learned this:
Your fragrance came, and I was made alive.
I gave my life a hundred times, and fell -
I heard your call, and I was born again.
I placed a net to catch the Falcon Love
Deep in my heart - he seized my heart, and went....

LOOK, I tried everything, but nothing
was lovelier than you.
And when I dived into the ocean,
there was no pearl like you!
I opened a thousand vats and barrels
and tasted all of them,
But never was intoxicated
by any wine but you.
How strange! There smile jasmine and roses
with fragrance in my heart,
But never came close to my bosom
the jasmine-breasted friend.
The pigeon “Heart” flies from my body
up to your roof, my soul,
And I complain like nightingales....for
my pigeon stays with you!

There is a candle in your heart,
ready to be kindled.

There is a void in your soul,
ready to be filled.

You feel it, don't you?
You feel the separation
from the Beloved.

Invite Him to fill you up,
embrace the fire.

Remind those who tell you otherwise that
Love
comes to you of its own accord,

and the yearning for it
cannot be learned in any school.

Rumi

Leave all worries behind and make your heart pure
like the face of a mirror with no image or design

once your heart is cleansed of all images,
it will contain them all

A poem written before Maulan Rumi (ra) passed away:

On the day of my death
When you see my coffin carried past
Do not think that I take the troubles of this world with me,
Do not cry for me or pity me.
When you fall into Satan's trap
This is the time to cry out of remorse.
When you see my funeral procession do not mourn at the separation,
For that is the time of my meeting, my reunion.
When they place me in the grave do not say farewell,
The grave is the curtain over heaven’s gate.
You have seen the sun set, now watch it rise.
The sun and the moon come to no harm when they set.
Only to you the seem to set,
In reality they are but preparing for a rebirth.
The grave seems like a prison
But in fact it is the escape of the soul from prison.
What seed was ever sown which did not grow,
So why should the seed of man not flourish too?
Which bucket was drawn up from the well empty.
Do not weep because Joseph fell into the well.
If you close your mouth on this side,
Open it on the other,
For you are in the world of spirit far from tumult and confusion.

Sadreddin Konevi says:

“ Mevlana (ra) was a matchless pearl in the centre of the necklace of wisdom”

Bedreddin Yahya (a famous poet in his period of time says of Maulana Rumi (ra)

“Of what value is they eye which does not weep in sorrow,
The collar which is not torn in mourning?
I swear that this soul has not received
One as great as you”

Lastly Kadi Sirajeddin says:

“The day the thorn of death pierced your sacred foot, if only the hand of fate had struck my head with the sword of death, and my eyes had not had to see the world bereft of your presence”.

Where did you get it from?

I am currently reading a book on the life of Mawlana Rum (ra) but I want something more better indepth than this book.

Anyway here's a bit of Mawlana Rum (ra) for ya:

"The man who dies before death is truly alive.
His soul is purified and he has been raised up".

Also from the book I am reading, there is some background/info regarding the Sima dance.

"Every movement made in Sema has a diving meaning: The turning symbolises seeing God from every side and being enlightened by every aspect of Him. Stamping the feet symbolises crushing the dancer's carnal nature underfoot and conquering it. Opening the arms means the way to perfection and finally the prostration is humility before God". (Taken from Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi (ra) by Mehmet Onder)
