Syria suspends fully veiled school teachers

Hundreds of Syrian teachers wearing the face veil were dismissed from their schools as the Ministry of Education said they undermine the secularism of the state, according to press reports Tuesday.

Syrian Minister of Education Ali Saad said in a meeting with heads of Teachers Syndicate offices that the dismissal of 1,200 teachers who wear the face veil, also called the ‘niqab,’ was necessary, the Lebanese daily As-Safir reported Tuesday.

Syria is a secular country??!!

edit: okay they want to adopt a secular education method.

DO the teachers wear their veils WHILE teaching? I dont think so. and if they did. just tell them to take it off. Suspending them is too much. Feels like someone pulled some strings... somewhere/

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

The government there are alwai shias while the population is generally sunni I think.

(there was a previous government that may have been sunni, but they then decided to merge countries with egypt in order to make a united arab republic hoping others would join in too, but then some soldiers mutinied and took over.)

Possibly. The current president's father and his cronies were shia, but officially the current administration (and we don't know ow many of the old cronies are hiding and pulling the strings) is Sunni.

Also, I guess they're trying to improve relations with France and Italy, where news like this might possibly be welcomed.

Personally I think if a woman wears niqab she should teach just women or small children (and be in an environment wear she can remove it), because the face IS a big part of teaching.

Shouldn't be the law though.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

post-soviet really.

socialist, like free government bakeries etc.

but HUGE numbers of spies. I wouldn't like to be typing this at an internet cafe if I was still in Syria, cos someone would be looking over my soldier (dont have the technology to monitor computers lol)

How do they pay all those spies?

Would there really be as many as people suspect or would ballooning the number be a tactic as fear is just as useful even if the threat is smaller?

or maybe it's just the feeling you get when you're on holies Blum 3

you know, the relaxed, no stress, no worries. The simplicity of the country, The no phone, no internet, no TV (Even though we had TV, all in arabic which was hmm...interesting...)
The MUSLIM feeling, the Salaams everywhere.
The freedom to wear your scarf without feeling like you're a sore spot (that might have been emphasized by the fact that we came from France)
The simple souq/market and the merchants trying to trick you coz they know you're not from round there. Or the nice merchants who give you stuff for free coz you're not from there Blum 3
Learning the few odd word of arabic to try and better communicate. My fav "maa fii moushkila" (no problem) me and my dad use to say it all the time, especially when my mum would get angry at something, we'll hold our hand up, close our eyes in peacefulness and say "maa fee moushfilla zawjatii/oummi"

Can i throw a tantrum, stamp my feet and all and say i wanna go back?

aah yeah that feeling, sounds like when i went to pk minus the arabic
