I don't get this. Isn't the whole point of ihtikaf that it's not a social/group event, but instead you do it by yourself. Your not even really allowed to chat to other people why doing it - how is being surrounded by 49,999 others going to encourage that?

Sori i was half asleep wn i wrote that at sehri time.
No probs. I am quite sure I heard a few days ago the guy at the mosque mentioning that collective i'tkaf had its benefits, but I was not really paying attention, so no idea if he had a reason for saying that other than trying to get people to do i'tkaf in the mosque.
