It's okay to lie

I *think* one of them may be, when your (or someone elses') life is at risk..?

You're allowed to twist the truth but not lie (I think)

The Imam a few Jummahs ago was talking about this.

He told a story about the Prophet (SAW) was escaping and he covered up and was leading the horse and (I think it was) H Umar was ON the horse and when the bad guys stopped them the conversation went something like this:

"Umar - do you know where your Prophet is"

(I can't remember what the answer was to this question)

"Umar - who's this chap with you?"

"He's my guide"

So the bad guys thought he meant guide as in tour guide or something, but he meant spiritual gude. He's given a simmilar 'double meaning' answer to the other questions too.

So he wasn't allowed to 'lie' to save the life of the most important person in Islam so I don't know if we are allowed to do that. But what he DID do was to twist the truth or word it in such a way that the bad guys will not clock on.

(I hope that makes sense - the Imam explained it soooo much better than I did)

lets not call it twist the truth as that doesnt sound goodly.

let's call it speaking in double meanings?

there are 2 conditions needed to be allowed to speak in double meanings. do you know these?

common guys. shaykh google asking isnt forbidden. tis all abt broadening our horizons and increasing our knowledge here. so, to your googling!

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

To reconcile a marriage and bring the husband and wife back together.. Thats another one of them.

I think you're tangling me even more. Okay, i may aswell explain what i meant. So when a marriage is falling apart, the only option you have is separation and divorce OR someone else could be the middle-y person and could jump in, and try to 'reconcile' the marriage by saying a few words (these so called lies) and put the marriage back to where it should be. Wait, i think i know where Lilly thinks i've mixed something up. Ohhhh, the couple can reconcile WITH each other BUT someone else can't reconcile the marriage because it needs to be from THEM? (So would that mean i shouldn't have used the word 'reconcile' but i should've just left it as 'bringing a husband and wife back to talking and forgiving terms by being the middle person').

im going to change my name to sherlock holmes. i just think it would have looked cooler if the above paragraph has said "sherlock holmes" instead of "lilly" everywhere.

first  occasion 're allowed to lie: to reconcile two people

second occasion we're allowed to lie: a husband/wife is allowed to lie to her wife/husband to keep the marriage sweet. saying stuff like "i love you the most in the whole wide world!" (admit it, the voice in your head read that in a high pitched voice LOL) or stuff like...actually... i will not go on.

so..whats the third reason occasion?

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Okay, so this is what I found from that amazing website:

Humaid b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Auf reported that his mother Umm Kulthum daughter of 'Uqba b. Abu Mu'ait, and she was one amongst the first emigrants who pledged allegiance to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him), as saying that she heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:

A liar is not one who tries to bring reconciliation amongst people and speaks good (in order to avert dispute), or he conveys good. Ibn Shihab said he did not hear that exemption was granted in anything what the people speak as lie but in three cases: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons and the narration of the words of the husband to his wife, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband (in a twisted form in order to bring reconciliation between them).

(Sahih Muslim)

and this is what I read:

the hadeeth of Umm Kulthoom Bint `Uqbah Ibn
Abee Mu`ayt in which she said, “I heard the Messenger of Allāh () say, “He is
not a liar who reconciles between people and narrates something good or says
something good.” (Reported by Bukhaaree 2692)
In Abū Daawood’s narration, she said, “I have not heard the Messenger of
Allāh  license people to lie in anything except for three matters. The
Messenger of Allāh  would say, “I do not consider to be a liar a man who
resolves differences between people: he who says something, intending
nothing other than to bring harmony between them; a man who speaks about
war; and a man who speaks to his wife or a woman who speaks to her husband
(words with which he or she intends to increase the love that exists between
them).” (Related by Abū Daawood 4921)

now Ms Hummus, what wld you like as a prize? a daisy chain?

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Finally! What a good way of reminding us all. Instead of just stating it, making us think, and then we have to look for it in the proper places!
