The day I had a Twix

On the day in question, the sun was shining bright. Temperature was a comfortable 21 degrees. I’d just finished work, enjoyed the two mile cycle to Springfields (a small ‘relaxing’ area just outside the town centre)

I was sat on the grass munching on my Twix, taking in the rays, getting a tan (not that I really needed a tan, my ethnic origin being what it is)

The big screen was on and there were a lot of people gathered round it.

During the wintery days I used to get the bus to college after work and wait in the canteen or library for lessons to start. But on days like this I loved sitting in front of the big screen watching the world go by. I still had 40 minutes before lessons started.

The builder looking bloke sat on the hill opposite me looked like he was also killing time.

As did the group of hooded teenagers stood outside the newsagents smoking and spitting.

There were a few of groups of couples in the coffee shop that spilled out onto the patio area on days like today.

There was a woman breastfeeding her new-born child in plain view.

A policeman walking alone. I recall thinking ‘don’t they usually walk in pairs?’

Whoa – hold on a minute.

Let’s rewind a little.

A woman breastfeeding her child? In Public? What’s that all about?

So I done the right thing. The thing anyone would do in a situation like this. I took out my smart phone, logged onto Facebook and updated my status.

“Sat here enjoying my Twix in the sunshine. The last thing I expected to see was a woman breastfeeding her child.”

I had a few inappropriate comments from a few inappropriate people, but I also had some genuine comments.

Someone wrote that they recall watching a documentary about a group of women who thought there’s nothing wrong with this and arranged times and they went out for the sole purpose of feeding their new-born in public. They sat around in coffee shops and on park benches, breast fed their child and returned home.

I was most shocked at a comment from my girl cousin. She wrote “Why do men have an issue with it? There’s nothing wrong with it. Although I personally wouldn’t do it, men need to realise that it’s a completely natural thing for a woman to breastfeed her child”

So I just had to reply “I agree that it’s natural. It’s about as natural as going to the toilet or having sexual encounters with ones life partner. But there are some natural things that should only be done in the privacy of your own home.”

I understand it’s not a popularity contest, but I had 22 ‘likes’ on my comment whereas she only got 3 on hers. To me this suggested that more people are of the opinion that breastfeeding, although natural, should be a private act.

From their reaction, I took it the hoodies had noticed her too as they were giggling and pointing.

The woman just carried on as anyone bottle feeding a child would, finished, buttoned up, and was on her way.

Looking around I saw that quite a few people had spotted her.

As she was leaving Springfields, I caught her glancing round to check how much of a stir she had caused. Her smirk suggested that it was a deliberate attention seeking stunt.

Almost as if by magic, another police officer had appeared out of thin air.

The builder had gone.

There was 5 minutes left for the lesson to start so I got up, put the Twix wrapper in the bin, locked up my bike and went to class.

Your response would've been similar to what I would have said. Breastfeeding should be left to the four walls of your house. There is no need to catch the attention of the people in your area and deliberately make such attention seeking stunts. I think Islamically, a woman wouldn't do that (I havn't ever seen it) and even if it was feeding time, they'd probably bring extra blankets to cover themselves and make sure nothing can be seen. I think this is where modesty comes in, and after all, that area is part of the Satr, so it should be covered.

F.Y.I - I just remembered it wasn't actually a Twix I was eating cos Twix is apparently Haram. I was actually eating a cheap Asdas own copy of a Twix bar.
Wink

Is it haraam?

If you're asking about breastfeeding in public, I think the answer may be yes (although I'm not an alim)
if you're asking about Twix, I hope it's not haram. I will do my research and let you know. But someone pointed out a link to an old website that indicated it may well be haram. I think it was at the time the post in that link was created, but Mars have since then resolved the issue. But don't quote me on that until I've finished my research.
Don't know about others, but I like to play it safe. So I'm not going to eat any Mars products unil I've got to the bottom of this.

No it's not haraam. The link rawrs gave was from 2007 and that's when there was the whole outcry about it. And the vegetarian society complained too so they changed it back!

Oh. In that case it WAS Twix that I had.
I thought that was the case, but didn't want to say until I was sure.

breasfeeding in public: fine as long as we cant see anything.

even though, i wouldnt ever do it. too embarassing and shy. and im not into putting myself in THOSE kinds of risks. the kind that would embarass me or compromise my religion.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

I dont believe it's a "risk". You'd be compromising your religion if you let your hold go hungry! It is possible to cover properly even whilst brastfeeding. I saw a woman in the very busy primark once, she was barely noticeable sitting underneath one of the cloth shelve things lol I just happened to look down and she was there, all covered and everything. If I was to breastfees I try not to do it in public, but it's hardly what people do for fun or their own Pleasure, the have to feed their kid and when you can't actually see anything it's really not a problem...though it might still make us feel uncomfortable.

I LOVE springfield's small grassy patch where they have the big screen Sooooo relaxing to just sit with friends and enjoy a cold drink.

Didn't realise it's a real place. I thought I had made up. Are my thought becoming reality? I was thinking about winning on the Euromillions yesterday.

Hmmm.......

No need to do research. Read the comments above, it's clearly allowed - I'm having it for breakfast.

Im still in a kind-of doubt situation and I havnt't read on it properly. (I seriously do not understand how my sister survives on not eating Nestle chocolates. She's sticking to her word and it's been over a year or two now! She's made that decision and then theres me who can't leave Twix alone!) Dash 1
