Strong Desires

What I have taken from this:

The Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) said : ' A clever person who condemns himself and works for the Hereafter and a helpless person is someone who follows after his desires and caprices , yet he hopes that Allah swt will grant him good wishes'

The Man who who worships his own passions and desires is the most hopeless to teach or guide.

I don't get that hadith. I'm not disagreeing with it (of course), but it doesn't make sense to me. Who are WE to condemn ANYONE (even ourselves)? That is only for Allah (swt) to do, no?

And also, how does hoping that Allah (swt) forgives us, even though we are weak, make us a hopeless person? Surely that would, at least, mean we are a hopeful person (leaving aside whether we are delusional or not as an unrelated matter).

Can anyone help?

Don't just do something! Stand there.

By "condemns himself" I do not think it means "condemn" condemn as in the case of law, but more in the case of desire. Condemn meaning not acting on haraam impulses.

Or I may be totally wrong.

As for the latter part it seems to indicate that you should also work towards your betterment as that should be better than not working towards it.

Of course this could also linked to the discussion on despair...

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

I kinda assumed that, but for me it was 'the hopless person is someone who hopes' which was confusing.

Do you mean 'helpless' instead of 'hopeless' ?
