And You Thought You Had It Bad…

Salaam

How often have become depressed over something that is bothering us? How often do we sit there feeling sorry for ourselves because of something that has happened?

And how many times do we put our problems into perspective by comparing it to those who maybe more stressed out them we are?

Only a few days ago I was sitting in a lecture in Uni feeling sorry for myself….and I got talking to the person next to me and that individual (unintentionally) made feel like an ungrateful spoilt little girl after I heard their life story…

I spent a day with another friend of mine the other day…all she could talk about was getting beats from her parents, forced marriage stress, financial problems and an “evil” stepmother…

Study Circles

Salaam

There are numerous informal study circles’ that take place in my area. Some people choose to summarise/simplify and convey the words of contemporary or classical scholars whilst others based on their own understanding of the Qur’an and hadiths directly preach the word of Allah (swt) and His Rasool (saw).

Do any of you guys regularly attend such circles? If so, do you actually learn something or is it just a waste of time?

Do you find yourself benefiting from such circles and/or implementing what you have learned in the talk?

Or do you just attend cos your mum forces you?

Asian Gangs

Asian gang who got out of control

Three British-born Pakistani men are facing life sentences after being convicted of murdering a white graduate in London while drunk. BBC News Website looks at the case in detail.

Three young men get very drunk, shout racist abuse, assault a waiter in a curry house and get involved in a series of brawls, climaxing with an attack on a innocent man who crosses their path.

It sounds like an all too familiar night of violence of the type which blights many city centres in Britain.

Keep In Touch…

Salaam

As a person I always try to stick to my word…I don’t like being long and letting people down…If someone has asked me to do something I pretty much do it straight away….If I’ve promised to be somewhere at a certain time I’m always there…..If I’m involved in something I like to be totally committed and give it 101%

But for some reason I terrible at keeping in touch with people.

Pack Your Bags I’m Taking You to Pakistan…

Salaam

It’s been years since I heard my dad say this….but when I was a teenager I used to hear this a lot…

Usually it was when I kept on speaking in English and dad was speaking to me in Urdu…..this used to tick him off but now even he’s given up on trying to teach us Urdu…

Whenever any of us used to go into a strop or acted like a moody, stroppy teenager….we used to hear “That’s it- go upstairs and pack your bags, you’re all going Pakistan”…

Even as a 15year old I never understood this threat…I loved going Pakistan and dad knew this.

Have your parents ever threatened you like this? Or do they use other threats….and have your parents ever actually carried out their threats?

Sponging Off The Government

Salaam

Does anyone believe that there is a high percentage of people in Asian community who try to cheat the system?

Maybe I’m generalizing but in my road alone I often hear about so and so who was illegally working and was deported back to his country…or people who have been summoned to court cos of benefit fraud…or people who work and earn good money yet claim unemployment benefits…or people who are fit and healthy who claim disability living allowance…etc etc

I remember when I was in college people used to often get so much money out of “patta” (credit card scams)

Religious And Arrogant

Salaam

Imam Ghazali has said that the people of knowledge are more in danger of being victims of arrogance.

It is said that before his fall, Satan was an extremely important Jinn, who through his worship reached the status of an Angel. However he refused to bow down to Hadrat Adam (as) because he thought he was better then him...

We too, should be careful of our “self righteous/ we know better then others” attitude, which can subtly take us away from Islam.

A bit of knowledge and pious actions results in the superiority complex for many people.

Keep God Out Of The Classroom

Salaam

“Keep God out of class. One would have thought that 7/11 would see off religious schools for good. And about time too!” Polly Toynbee (Guardian)

Tony Blair has said educating children in their faith is “consistent” with a muti-religious society.

However, Barry Sheerman who chairs the common education questioned the idea of a “ghettoised” system.

Recently a survey in the Guardian found that 64% of people opposed the idea of government funding for faith schools, that’s nearly 2/3 of the sceptical public.

So are faith schools a threat to social cohesion in Britain?

Islam Feminists Urge Gender Jihad

Islam feminists urge gender jihad

Organisers of the first international congress on Islamic feminism are calling for a "gender jihad".

Organiser Abdennur Prado Pavon says the struggle for gender equality in Islamic countries involves refuting chauvinist interpretations of Muslim teachings.

The congress is being held in Spain, organisers say, because they want their message to reach the growing number of Muslim women in Europe.

Around 300 delegates are looking at women's rights in the Islamic world.
