"Tolerance is the graveyard of defects."

"Just marvel at man: he sees by means of some gristle, and speaks by means of some flesh, and hears by means of a bone, and breathes by means of a perforation!"

what do they mean?

"How many people find fault in what they're reading and the fault is in their own understanding" Al Mutanabbi

1.
Imam Ali's saying on tolerance. He means take it, bear it. Dont let your ego control your emotions. Get rid of your ego.
If you learn to tolerate other people's criticism of you, then this improves your own personality. They will think you have a big heart, you can take it.
But if you keep reacting and hitting back, this turns you into hateful person, a bigot.

2.
Imam Ali's description of people who have pride and arrogance.
Humans think they are it. But in reality they are nothing. Their organs operate with nothing but bones and flesh. For example, it is your bones in ears that make you hear voice. You rely on bones and yet you think big of yourself. If you reflect on your own body, it would make you a humble person. You will know that before might of God, you are insignificant nothing.

Sometimes, poor english translation of holy words can result in confusion. Please check with original Arabic inorder to understand exactly what was said.
Or, simply as a top cleric to explain the saying to you. Thats what I always do when I don't get it.

Who's picture is that supposed to be??

Proof?

How does this fit in with how the early Muslims treated the prophet (saw), where they considered his spit to be full of barakah, and their treatment of the sahabah?

It is easy to make statements to attack others, but it is important to make sure they are accurate.

Didn't the Prophet (PBUH) prevented someone from prostrating before him.

Coming to Malik's post, yeah I mean these scholars, including Ali ibn Abi Talib are respected by virtually all Muslims and those principles are from Islam generally not just Shiaism.
However, concerning the point about bowing your head during destructive criticism, if we take that quote literally then I don't think that's a good idea. Surely, it would make you feel more down with yourself and chip away at your self-esteem and self-worth?
I feel it is possible to be polite, look them straight, yet firm with them.
