My friends wants to buy me something, (dunno why as they do for me as much as i do for them) but that doesnt matter...
would it be alright to say something around (NOT the words im actually going to use) "the greatest thing you guys could give me would be To try and become more religious."
i know it sounds like i'm full of myself. the thing is, i would DEFINITELY accept a little present from my friends as i know that i wouldnt want someone to refuse a present i give them, but they want to buy something in the hundreds of pounds!!!
I cant accept that! when i was talking about the thing i wanted, it was just whim, i didnt think they'd take it seriously!

Depends on if you can pull it off or not.
The idea is good, but at the same time you have to avoid making them think you are being... less friendly?
So as a compromise you may put your foot down and say you will not accept an exensive gift - because its the thought that counts. and then cough and say triple chocolate cake and then cough again and then carry on about watever you want to mentioning how all this gift think makes you uncomfortable and then go on about and tell them WE should try to be better Muslims.

How do you mean you want them to become a bit more religious?
what ideas do you have that you would like to see in them?
Would they take offense?

@S.b.f. i dont think they would take offence, we're all muslims and we all know that there is room for improvement, from regular praying to starting to wear the headscarf.
but i dont want it to be just something i say in the air that'd go in from one ear and out the other ( it IS costing me a a very-much-wanted present! =P) So i need to make it sound effective...somehow..

You could ask for a different type of cake. chocolate cake is not the only variety out there... there is also... white chocolate! (I kid, there is more variety.)
and yes, you do not want to end up without the good advice being heeded and no present either.
Personally, I would accept the present - after making sure its not so expensive that it means you feel guilty accepting it.

nothing wrong with a summer job, whats wrong, is guetting the summer job to pay for the kimono.
