Son beaten by father sues mother in High Court

A man is suing his mother over her alleged failure to protect him from his father's beatings.

The 32-year-old County Durham man, who cannot be identified, told the High Court in London that his mother, now in her late 60s, assaulted him herself.

He claimed that she aided and abetted daily punishment by her husband by reporting his wrongdoings.

His mother denied liability and has claimed the case was brought outside the legal time limit.

'We will be able to live to 1,000'

An old article from the BBC (December 2004), but an intriguing one nevertheless:

ife expectancy is increasing in the developed world. But Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey believes it will soon extend dramatically to 1,000. Here, he explains why.

Ageing is a physical phenomenon happening to our bodies, so at some point in the future, as medicine becomes more and more powerful, we will inevitably be able to address ageing just as effectively as we address many diseases today.

I claim that we are close to that point because of the SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) project to prevent and cure ageing.

It is not just an idea: it's a very detailed plan to repair all the types of molecular and cellular damage that happen to us over time.

UK family shot dead in eastern Pakistan

Three Britons - all members of the same family - have been shot dead in a marriage dispute in eastern Pakistan, local police have said.

Mohammad Yousaf, 51, his wife Pervez, 49, and daughter Tanya, 23, were killed at a cemetery in a village near Gujrat.

The three, of Nelson, Lancashire, were shot by four gunmen - understood to be related to them - after an argument broke out. Another woman was killed.

One man has been arrested and two other suspects are on the run.

Eyewitness Muhammed Anwar described how two groups of attackers had been waiting for the family - inside and outside the cemetery.

Is divorce a sin?

Just a question separated from another topic.

Is divorce a sin?

I thought it wa a disliked but halaal action... meaning not a sin.

yes it has its taboos and social phobias etc, but that is not the same as a sin, so where the idea that it is a sin come from?

I also thought there were no prerequisites for divorce - that there was no requirements. People were allowed to divorce and as long as it was done in the right ways, there was no sin.

video of Cartoonist Lars Vilks "being attacked"

A few things before I get to the video:

1. The few seconds before the demonstrations start WILL offend Muslims.
2. The rest of the protest seems like straight forward civil disobedience to me - people shouting slogans.
3. Trying to offend people which the few seconds of the shown video clearly show as the aim is not the same as free speech.

I got the video from here where you can read the comments of other people who condiser the protesters in a different light to me.

Milk... in a bag

Ok, the other day when in Sainsburys I spotted something strange - milk. in a bag.

It was next to the 2 litre cartons, but it was in a bag.

Pricewise, it was 3p cheaper than the carton. but its in a bag.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that people can purchase milk in a bag? Doesn't seem like a very secure way to transport milk.

The people pushing it think it produces less waste. But its milk. in a bag.

it goes in a jug which you can buy separately - for more than the 3p you save over the cartons.

Do any you buy milk in a bag?

Identity cards set to be scrapped

Identity cards will be scrapped under plans announced by the new Conservative and Lib Dem coalition government.

Their abolition is among measures the parties have agreed to reverse what they say was "the substantial erosion" of civil liberties in recent years.

Other proposals include reforms to the DNA database, tighter regulation of CCTV and a review of libel laws.

Since their 2008 introduction, Labour argued ID cards helped tackle benefit fraud, identity theft and other crimes.

The Tories and Lib Dems have both opposed ID cards from the outset, arguing they are expensive, intrusive and have done little to tackle the most serious threats to society such as terrorism and organised crime.

Adam Boulton loses it with Alastair Campbell

Quite cool really.

The Conservatives were rattled today by the future resignation of Gordon Brown and the mouthpiece of Rupert Murdoch - a major backer of the Conservatives starts to lose it.

Watch (4.5 minutes in):

If the Conservtives get in and dismantle the BBC and Ofcom like Murdoch would like, eventually Sky News coluld turn into Fox News. Are we seeing the first step of that now?

EDIT - replaced by a better quality link.

Smoke bomb at Manchester United in anti-Glazer protest

Angry Manchester United fans have set off a smoke bomb outside Old Trafford as part of a mass protest against the club's American owners, the Glazers.

Hundreds of fans congregated outside the ground ahead of the final game of the season against Stoke, chanting and brandishing placards.

The smoke bomb was set off outside the club's Megastore.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed one smoke bomb had been set off but said there were no injuries or arrests.

Green and gold

The Glazers took over at Old Trafford five years ago. Critics said the family borrowed money to buy the club and saddled it with massive debts.
