NO TOPIC - Part 4
Hi,
For those of you who may be new,
this is a NO TOPIC thread. Here were discuss nothing.
When we have nothing to say, we say it here.
In this thread we just relax and let everything out. This is your ideal place to talk about nothing. If something does not fit into any other catagory, then it will easily fit in here.
flies the falcon high discussing nothing
more pleasure when she's just messing
when the flower sings but says naught
thats when her smell has great clout

HELP im having a brain freeze, and someone must be good at maths!
can someone please tell me how to use this:
formula for the nth term :- 1/2 n (n+1)
i really cant remember how to use it and the revision book doesnt seem to be helping :/
in other thoughts, i wonder if im still gonna be here for my 1st (revival) birthday? 😛

I'm not really into nth terms or anything but I found this site that is: http://www.emaths.co.uk/tutorials/nthterm/Sequences/Presentation_Files/…
If I understood the presentation, which feels more basic than the example you have to work with, n is the position of each number in the sequence, so for the 3rd number in the sequence 2n+1 you substitute 3 for n, ie (2x3)+1=7.
0.5n(n+1) means a sequence made up of 0.5 x n multiplied by (n+1). The 3rd number in that sequence would be 1.5x4=6. I may be mistaken.

You're welcome anyway. I've tried to interpret it with an edit, not sure if that's more use since I'm an ignoramus in these matters.

if u tryna get the 6th term so n=6.. do the brackets 1st
so its 6 + 1 so u get 7 in the bracketz
then u work out half of 6 for the outside and get 3
then u multiply the 2 2g4a... 3x7= 21
kinda hard xplainin over this lol

yes it is basic and what i knew/understood already and i think u have understood it correctly.

Well I think I answered the question in the final sentence.

EDITED
nth term = -(0.5)*n*(n+1)
n : nth term
1 : -(0.5)*(1)*(1+1)= -1
2 : -(0.5)*(2)*(2+1)= -3
3 : -(0.5)*(3)*(3+1)= -6
4 : -(0.5)*(4)*(4+1)= -10
Re: NO TOPIC - Part 4
Joie de Vivre — Thu, 27 Aug 2009 - 15:03
Hey Dawud. Cuz. I think you missed a factor of n in each of the -0.5 bits. Also if it's -0.5 then I mistook the minus for an extension of the colon. If you're right about the minus then I think the sequence goes -1, -3, -6, -10 etc.
Re: NO TOPIC - Part 4
nth term = -(0.5)*(n+1)
n : nth term
1 : -(0.5)*(1+1)= -1
2 : -(0.5)*(2+1)= -1.5
3 : -(0.5)*(3+1)= -2
4 : -(0.5)*(4+1)= -2.5
comprendez?
mi pienso comprendo pero :

formula for the nth term :- 1/2 n (n+1)

i think uve missed that out? :S

just read this post, somehow missed it b4?
anyway it sounds right...
i was confused cuz i thort its like
say n=1
1+1=2
then ud have to do 0.5 x 1 too :S
and then times 0.5 (answer of ^) by 2 so
2 x 0.5 = 1
:S

it was the same as what i thought :/ so it may be right. hmmmmm
