Good character is the heart of Sufism. The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who has the best manners.
Good character (Akhlaq) will be the heaviest on the scales on the Day of Judgment.
Good character may be something that one is born with, or it may be acquired.
However, it may only be acquired from someone who has it more firmly rooted in his nature than his own.
It is well known fact that a sensible man can become even more sensible by sitting in the company of intelligent and sensible people, and a learned man can learn even more by sitting in the company of the knowledgeable.
Therefore a man of beautiful character may acquire an even more beautiful character by being with people whose characters excel his own.

Good character is whats on my mind most of the time
it can be easy when in a good environment or jus at home bieng ma normal self
but at uni....character is a tough one :?

nah not neccessarily
just at times, when with 'friends' you can say or do things which are out of character
if theyre talkin stupid stuff....which is nearly always the case....i mostly stay quite or change/divert topic..........but occasionally i can say daft stuff
besides that, good character i think means more than refraining from bad....doing positive acts, which i dunno if i do
plus i look to people i consider 'pratcising' and i look at the character (not my role to judge, no doubt) - but you see em swearing, cursing, in anger, sayin daft stuff....makes you think :?

theres Iman, the belief - Fairly easy
Islaam - The practical side - a challenge no doubt
and finally Ehsan - 'to do the beutiful' - what sufism is all about, and boy its hard to do it constantly
Most of us Alhamdulillah were born with the Iman, i see many with the Islaam.....but very few in todays society who have good character

The point you raise is very pgood because the the company that you keep is very important, for it affects your spiritual heart.
Please, don't confuse outwardly pious people with inwardly virtuous people, they can be different. Although they should be the same thing in the Guided people.
What am I talking about? Good question, I'm not sure I can explain by typing words, (besides my head is all sleepy...) so how's this,
An analogy I once heard:
In the same way that if a perfume jar is kept near an object, then the object will be imbued with the perfume and it will also smell sweet...
So if virtue, manifest via virtuous people, is kept near the human heart then the heart also gets imbued with virtue...
Now, these virtuous people are of three main types:
The first type are those whose actions make you want to do good things, they guide you by example.
The second are those whose words inspire your heart to do good deeds. Just by listening to them you can feel yourself wanting to be a better person.
The third type is the highest of all. No words or actions are needed with these people, just sitting in the company of them person makes you want to do good.
Can you relate the people you know to these three types?
Something to ponder, perhaps...
As a famous Muslim Anatolian poet once wrote (something like):

good points, i do think i can relate people to those types....especially the third type....there are some people in this world who through love purely, have made me want to do whats good.

It’s depressing when you come across those people who may be strict in the ritualistic side of Islam…but lack basic manners for their fellow human being.
There is a danger of such devotions being in vain.
I value character in others a lot more then their acts of devotions.
Thats why some Sufians deserve Mercedes.
Why? does it help there character?
Mercedes dunt break down too often, maybe they should get an old ford, which constantly breaks down, and that way it is testing there patience all the tym, and improving there patience and character,
So people, if you have a banger which breaks dwn often, thats ya excuse, say it improves u as a person, then give em my explantion; Tell em Razor sent ya.

When they are in the fast lane with such a machine, they feel good.
And when they feel good, they dont tend to break china.
China, evidently, is where all the knowledge suppose to be.

Love of Allah (swt) should be much stronger then fear of Him.
When one does something out of fear their actions are within limits…however, when one does something out of love then they do extra to please their beloved.
Imam Ghazali has likened the slave who worships his Master out of fear, to the slave who works for his employer only because he fears that he will be punished or fired if he doesn’t do what he is supposed to do.
Allah has said “My Mercy has overcome my wrath”.
Rabia Bint Ismail was another Sufi, who was famous for her loving discourses with Allah (swt).
She once said
“My Beloved – there is none unto Him, and none shares my heart with Him,
My Beloved is absent from my sight and my person, but He is not absent from my heart”.

Hadrat Imam Ali (ra) said
“There are people who worship Allah to gain His Favours, this is the worship of traders; while there are some who worship Him to keep themselves free from His Wrath, this is the worship of slaves; a few who obey Him out' of their sense of gratitude and obligations, this is the worship of free and noble men.
Wow cool.
So we should go from being a trader to become a True Slave, and then strive to be noble.
