The story of Al Baqarah

The name of the surah Al Baqarah is taken from an incidence that happened at the time of Prophet Musa (as) and is retold in the quran, Al-Baqara: 67-71

"When Moses said to his nation: Allah commands you to slaughter a cow, they replied: Are you taking us in mockery? I seek protection with Allah lest I should be one of the ignorant he said. Call on your Lord, they said, to make known to us what she shall be. He said: "He says she is a cow neither old, nor virgin, middling between both." Therefore, do as you have been ordered. Call on your Lord, they said, to make known to us what her color shall be. Your Lord says: "The cow is yellow, a rich yellow pleasing to the onlookers." Call on your Lord, they said, to make known to us which cow she shall be; to us cows look alike. If Allah wills, we shall be guided. He replied: He says: "She is a cow, neither worn out plowing the earth nor watering the field, one kept secure free from any blemish." Now you have brought us the truth, they answered. And they slaughtered her, after they had been reluctant to do so." (Al-Baqara: 67-71)

and summarised in this hadith that is also a part of the forty hadith collected by Imam Nawawi:

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said : I heared the messenger of Allah say : "What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you [to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets that destroyed those who were before you." Related bu Bukhari and Muslim

This is only apart of the story, and has been expanded on in the commentary of the qur'an done by the famous muslim scholar Ibn Kathir:

Misconceptions about Islam

A recording of The Revival's "Let's Talk Show" from 14 September 2008 where Shaykh Ibrahim Ossi Effa is bombarded with questions about Islam mainly on topics where there are misconceptions held either within the Muslim community or by Non Muslims.

Questions were asked and answered on many topics mainly focussing on:

  1. The Qur'an
  2. The Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him
  3. Violence and terrorism
  4. Women's rights

A few other questions were sprinkled in for good measure.

Three lines that changed the world

Chapter al-Kawthar

Inna aAtayna kal kawthar
Fasalli li rabbika wanhar
Inna shani-aka huwal abtar

Verily We have given to you the abundance
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice
Indeed your enemy is the one who is cut off

Chapter al-Kawthar (The Abundance) is the smallest chapter in the Qur’an consisting of only three lines. From a linguistic, literary, theological, rational and ideological point of view this chapter has the utmost significance. Being the smallest chapter in the Qur’an it is often cited by those who are involved in some form of polemic. This is due to the famous challenge of the Qur’an. The Qur’an states:

A History of God

How the Holy Quran was compiled
