A Pakistani Christian woman as been on Death row for five years.

A Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi, as been on death row for the past five years for Blasphemy charges.

“The Christian mother of five had been on death row since 2010 after being accused of blasphemy during a dispute over drinking water concerning a fellow factory worker. The death penalty was upheld last October by the Lahore High Court but yesterday the Supreme Court suspended the sentence until the end of the appeal process.”

“The Anglican bishop, who after coming to the UK went on to become the Bishop of Rochester, pointed to concerns about the validity of the case against Asia who was accused of making derogatory remarks about the Muslim Prophet, Mohammed. Bishop Nazir-Ali, who is an expert in Islam as well as a Christian theologian, said: “I cannot imagine how someone in her position could have said such things given the overwhelming dominance of the Muslim community in the area where she lived and worked. “I hope the court will recognise this and set aside the conviction.” Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which form part of its penal code, prescribe a sentence of death for offences of disrespect to Mohammed and life imprisonment for desecration of the Qur’an.
