'No fee degrees' university plan

The government is considering "no fee degrees", in which students in England would not pay tuition fees - but would not get any loans or other support.

These could be aimed at university students living at home with their parents, allowing them to avoid debt.

The proposal is in a draft framework for the future of higher education.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills says it might not be in the final version - and discussion of the plan remains "speculative".

But university leaders suggest the radical idea remains active and under consultation.

The National Union of Students says it "has concerns" the new scheme might limit the choice of universities available to poorer students.

Sink immigrants' boats - Griffin

The EU should sink boats carrying illegal immigrants to prevent them entering Europe, British National Party leader Nick Griffin has told the BBC.

The MEP for the North-West of England said the EU had to get "very tough" with migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

Pressed on what should happen to those on board, he said: "Throw them a life raft and they can go back to Libya".

Why do women wear black?

Talking almost specifically about niqabs.

On another forum, some people are arguing that muslim women are being oppressed and the proof of that is the black niqabs they wear in the sweltering the temperatures of the middle east while the men wear white.

I found that a ludicrous argument and said so, but the counter was why is it so universal then, with it being almost a unanimous colour worn by the women for the jilbab.

So... is it personal choice or a religious one to wear black?

and if personal, why is it so popular?

Six months later, no reconstruction in Gaza

Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine, 8 July 2009

Mahmoud Abu al-Anzain and his wife, Umm Naim, and their three children used to live in a two-room, cement-roofed house. It wasn't a palace, but it was a home. The house was completely destroyed by Israeli army fire during last January's assault on the Gaza Strip.

Since that day, al-Anzain, 32, and his family have lived in a tent in al-Rayan refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. "As you can see, under the heat of the July sun, and with the fear of mosquitos and snakes, we have lived in this tent for six months with no one taking care of us," said al-Anzain, as he reclined on a mattress on the ground.

At least 140 people have been killed and 828 injured after the worst violence in decades swept through the capital of China's restive region of Xinjiang last night, authorities said today.

Hundreds were under arrest and thousands of riot officers and armed paramilitary police were keeping tight control of southern Urumqi, following vicious clashes between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese. But witnesses reported that protests had spread to a second city, Kashgar, in the north-western region.

(Israeli) Minister calls for Jewish takeover of Palestinian areas in Israel

Israel's housing minister called for strict segregation between the country's Jewish and Arab populations last week as he unveiled plans to move large numbers of fundamentalist religious Jews to Israel's north to prevent what he described as an "Arab takeover" of the region.

Ariel Atias said he considered it a "national mission" to bring ultra-Orthodox Jews -- or Haredim, distinctive for their formal black and white clothing -- into Arab areas, and announced that he would also create the north's first exclusively Haredi town.

The new settlement drive, according to Atias, is intended to revive previous failed efforts by the state to "Judaize," or create a Jewish majority in, the country's heavily Arab north.
