Thought I may aswell start this off as all past members will also need to re-register.

Inshallah we will be a friendly bunch here, but expect many firework displays as we all defend our positions.

Just to avoid confusion, I have written some guidelines to choosing a name.

It's whatever you want it to be.

You — Sat, 14 Feb 2009 - 02:01

Salaams and welcome.

Make yourself at home, take part in discussions, start new and interesting ones, post blog posts and beware the Omrow.

Salaams

EDIT - not the biggest fan of your avatar. Can be taken in a negative manner. We should not hate Judaism and the Jews, but also challenge Israel. Not the topic for that though - just something to think about.

Sociology student — Sat, 14 Feb 2009 - 02:05

Hey 'You' Jazahka' Allah for the welcome and Noor, i'll take it as a compliment girl..thanks for the welcome x

Sociology student — Sat, 14 Feb 2009 - 02:11

what's Omrow? *puzzled*

Ok i'll change it but in the current climate when you see children being targetted and killed it hurts like hell. anyways i'll change it - didn't mean to upset you

Salma

You — Sat, 14 Feb 2009 - 02:19

The first bit was a joke.

As for the second bit, I am not offended or upset - just making sure that things start off on a pleasant tone (maybe replace the star with the flag? Not sure if that is better, but it may be)

salam Salma! Sociology eh!Sounds Interesting! may I ask which university you go to?
Enjoy your first year while it last at uni cause when it comes to second year it will become more intence but especially third year! So enjoy the moment while it last cause you will be swamped with assignments. (do not mean to scare you but just a little pointer). 😉

Anyways you have answered two of my questions already but missed two other questions, so I will fire away,

1) How did you find out about the forum?
2) Whats your favourate chocolate? 😃

Welcome to the forum, look forward reading your posts! 🙂

Sociology student — Sat, 14 Feb 2009 - 23:49

You're wrong! It's good and can open your mind to how the world works... or at least to question how the world works.

Dunno about how it works as a career though...

You — Mon, 16 Feb 2009 - 00:13

Call centres.

Do any degree you like and you have the option to end up in a call centre. or drive a taxi - I hear that has good money in some places.

Sociology student — Mon, 16 Feb 2009 - 00:34

Wednesday – no that’s cool, don’t worry about it. It’s good to be different 😉 It’s tough choosing your fave chocolate coz there’s too many to choose from. That’s what I was getting at…

Heyy I bet you didn’t know that with a sociology degree you can enter around 80% of the professions. Plus like Ya’qub says (salaam there!) it gives you a critical outlook on life and society as a whole. Don’t worry at times I too think it’s a load of bull! Lol…jobs –wise you can train to be a social worker, probation officer, teacher, government research, yess indeed call centers LOL (been there done that...wouldn’t like to do it for the rest of my life though) ermm, counselling, careers advicer…etc. I better stop or I’ll put you’ll to sleep.

Peace

PS Seraph: If Salma Hayak can breast-feed a ghayr Somalian 6 month old child in the presence of his mother(As part of raising awareness), then joining a forum shouldn't be that much of a challenge...?
Woh woh woh... she did what now?

Right behind you Yaqub! Sociology is about society and being practical in evaluating and understanding. Very useful for peoples persons, if that makes any sense.

Give me 5 examples where it would be useful? :doubt:

Like I said, it's not specially useful in linking to a career.

But not ALL the things you study have to be vocational. Only if you see life as nothing more than a chance to make money. What's wrong with studying something just because it is interesting?

Ya'qub — Fri, 20 Feb 2009 - 19:56
Health and social care mainly PLUS community centres.
It's not really anything to do with that though...

It's more like a history of the 20th century without mentioning any of the wars. (like a history of 20th century society - motivations behind different political movements, the role of education, religion, crime etc IN RELATION to the whole community, NOT in relation to individual people).

I think, if anything, it can lead to a job in population statistics/local government.

Where can I start?

1) Teaching
2) Law
3) Youth workers
4) Politcs
5) Parents mind find it useful

It is a really evaluative subject, the emphasis is on how you can use knowledge, not the big bin 'everything you know' approach.
