My first thought is that the nightwatchman shouldn't be sleeping at night, but then, you didn't say anything about "having this dream every night for weeks". So my second guess is that the a forensic search found traces of TNT on his coffee mug.

No your first guess is right. He slept for a few nights for weeks, a few too many. He doesn't have to night-sleep every day.
