Islamic group plans Wootton march
An Islamic group said to have links to an extremist movement is planning to march through the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett.
The town has become famous for honouring British war dead returning from Afghanistan.
Islam4UK pledged the protest would be peaceful with symbolic coffins representing Muslim victims.
Wootton's former mayor Chris Wannell has called on the group's leader not to hold the march.
'Brutal crusade'
North Wiltshire MP James Gray said: "I've seen in the past assorted groups threaten to march, but they don't actually do it.
"I wouldn't think they'd get permission from the police."
Islam4UK is said to call itself a "platform" for the extremist movement al-Muhajiroun.
Leader of Islam4UK, former lawyer Anjem Choudary, said the march would not coincide with a repatriation ceremony.
On its website the group said it was "totally unacceptable" to honour servicemen who had contributed "directly or indirectly" to the deaths of "well over 100,000 Muslims in Afghanistan in the last 8 years".

Seems to be a common sense response.

And so it ends. For now.
"A radical Islamic group has cancelled plans to hold an anti-war march through a town famous for honouring the UK's servicemen and women killed abroad.
Members of Islam4UK had planned to march through Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, to honour Muslims killed in the Afghanistan conflict."
And yet, all they have done is expose a large swathe of the British public to the misguided views of the BNP and increased the UK's general distrust of Muslims.

You may not have noticed, but David mitchel - the author of that piece - is I suspect not-a-muslim.
He also makes a very good point about showing how "I despise what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." is a lie.
I don't see why you are so offended by a bunch of morons expressing their views.
I do think there are extreme elements in the Muslim community, but I also think as long as they are talking and feeling a productive part of the process, that is all they will be doing. They will not be disenfranchised enough to listen to any call to arms and keeping them talking keeps all of us safer.

i won't waste my time speaking to Tom, as he clearly detests muslims. No amount of respectful banter will encourage him to think anything more or less.
Topic at hand, i think the march is totally disrespectful. There's a time and place for everything. If they want to demonstrate they should do so elsewhere. They should not demonstrate at a time when locals are honoring their dead soldiers.
There have been countless demonstrations against war in iraq, afghanistan palestine, personally i think demos achieve nothing, even if it is for a good cause. All that yelling and screaming and the iraq war still went ahead. yes i know i'll be heckled for this, but i can't see the point of it, if there is no end result.
i don't know who this group are i have never heard of them, nor care to, i don't like their approach its utterly distasteful.

Perhaps you could get your chums to stop plotting to blow us up for a few weeks? that would help but after the last few atrocities and attempted atrocities what would you expect flowers? we don't get all this disrespect from the hindus.

One does not defend plotters, especially plotters against oneself, with one's life or in any way at all, is the point. To exactly what extent this protest represents that is moot (although the group most certainly does). It's a question of degrees that Mitchell waffles around for an entire article, not very helpfully, believing he and the British public are their real audience and thus mistakenly playing down the impact. Choudary's argument is not common sense, it is insane saying we support the enemy but don't worry, and OBM seems happy with the end result.

tom, you're really showing yourself to be an ill-educated saddo lacking any semblance of critical thought.
Muslims are as diverse as Christians in their culture and level of fundamentalism: this is clearly a forum for moderates, so you slagging them off with playground drivel is like you ranting at the gentle Quakers for the Pope's stance on abortion and contraception causing mass suffering in Africa.
I agree that there are very real problems with Islam and the West but in my time lurking around these forums I have seen no evidence that your barely-understandable infantile tirades against these chaps are justified.

Kind of stupid if you ask me - getting banned for planning a peaceful demo.

Nobody did
wait until the wartime regulations kick in. meanwhile enjoy your jihad now that al qaeda has said that it will kill all europeans in the arabian peninsula it is clear that the fundis are simply a bunch of racists

Seems like you know more about al qaeda that I do. Hiding something?
You are like twins, mirror images of each other, hating the very fabric of your own being.

they made a public statement about 12 days ago that all europeans in the Arabian peninsula were targets it seems that you do not pay much attention to what's going on in the muslim world. "i hate the very fabric of my own being?" yet more teenage nonsense can we agree that their statement was racist?

You — Tue, 12 Jan 2010 - 12:31
I don't see why I have to pay attention - Al qaeda does not represent me, nor have a direct channel of communications with me.
yes - I didn't think that was even in debate.
(I was reading somewhere that since 2006, 98% of the victims of alqaeda have been "not-western" people, byt which I will assume they mean people in arab lands or other places where the majority are Muslims. They have probably killed more muslims in recent history than their so called enemies "of the west".)

Nothing good is ever gonna come out of Al Muhajiroon. I'm glad the gov is on their case. Anjem and co will probably run out of steam (ie hot air) once they find it difficult to meet up and goad each other to ever-increasing hights of lunacy.
Clearly, the Muslim community's policy of ignoring Al Muhajiroon didn't work. Only the gov has the power to do anything meaning with groups like this.
I suspect the gov found it necessary to act once it realised that Al Muhajiroon was spawning its very own white working class equivalent (Casuals, EDL, etc). EDL protests/rallies has been far more violent and dangerous than anything Al Muhajiroon could come up with. It had the potential to morph into a genuinely fascist movement - once it had dealt with Muslims, the Jews would have been next. The gov wasn't gonna ban the EDL etc because that would only have earned the gov ever-lasting hatred from the white working class. Banning Al Muhajiroon was the only sensible option - it had been done before, the law allowed for it, and, lets face it, no-one's gonna miss 'em (except maybe the Sun and the Star (and the Daily Mail and Daily Express)).

why are they my chums just because i am muslim and they are too? Quit judging ppl. Quit spewing out your hatred, you are sounding like those same fools you seem to despise so much, you're just the other side of the coin. As for flowers no i don't expect them from anyone except my husband. What do hindus have to do with this talk? You have the audacity to speak of respect where is your sense of respect? You have grouped all muslims as holding the same views as this al muhajirun group. You assume all muslims agree wit 9/11 and wish to destroy all non muslims. you need mental help. For how long have you been replying back n' forth on this topic you are obsessed and suffering from extreme paranoia, seek help.
i mean if you don't give a tuppence for us, why are you spending so much time here. And don't even attempt to insult me again, i did nothing to insult you, other than being born that is.
p.s YOU i heard in news today the group were banned. when government was asked why they had banned this group and not HT they said because they did not want members of HT to go underground. by this i assume its ok for al muhajiroon to go underground, because really they are no threat they never were, just a lot of hot air and embarrassment to government. But HT could be a real threat, so lets not ban them?
Re: Islamic group plans Wootton march
You — Tue, 12 Jan 2010 - 22:36
HT is larger and has more members. I am sure there are plenty of people who want them banned too - universities generally have a low tolerance approach to them.
Lets hope that the people who with islam4uk decide to continue on a path of peaceful demonstrations and discussions and stuff.
It may not always work, but sometimes it does.
