CAn Religion (Christianity) replace current Politics without any hiccups?

Was Christianity the law in the past? And what was the outcome?

From what I know of history, once upon a time the Church was the government but someone decided to break by disturbing it's fusional reserves. (Inducing latent deviation)

Warning; This may not make any sense because I like to waffle.
