On the Hijacking of Islam

If the terrorists that struck the USA last week were indeed Muslims, they have not only committed murder, which carries the death penalty, but have also committed a physical attack upon Islam by the damage they have done to its image.

A six year old Palestinian girl kneeled and nervously, yet gently laid a flower to join hundreds of other flowers, banners and candles in a small vigil held in Jerusalem to commemorate the death of thousands of Americans in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

The little girl rushed back, bashful, and held on her mother's hand and both stood quietly gazing at a burning candle.

At the scene, only a few reporters gathered, none of them represented foreign agencies; they were all Arabs and Palestinians.

Throughout the United States, people are feeling shock, grief and anger after Tuesday's attacks in New York and Washington, DC. But even as we struggle with these emotions, we must continue to think critically, to move beyond the buzzwords and hysteria of the mainstream media and to work with others in our communities to formulate progressive responses to the crisis.

Osama bin Laden: The godfather of terror?

Internal links George Bush: The new statesman?

The first time I met Osama bin Laden inside Afghanistan it was a hot, humid night in the summer of 1996. Huge insects flew through the night air, settling like burrs on his Saudi robes and on the clothes of his armed followers. They would land on my notebook until I swatted them, their blood smearing the pages. Bin Laden was always studiously polite: each time we met, he would offer the usual Arab courtesy of food for a stranger: a tray of cheese, olives, bread and jam. I had already met him in Sudan and would spend a night, almost a year later, in one of his mountain guerrilla camps, so cold that I awoke in the morning with ice in my hair.

oppression of Palestinians

Occupied Jerusalem: 15 September, 2001 (IAP News)

Muslim scholars all over the globe have strongly condemned the suicidal plane-crashes in the United States, saying that even if it was found that people from an Islamic background committed this horrendous act, Islam shouldn't be blamed for the actions of a few of its followers.

CNN Used 1991 Film To Incite Against Palestinians

CNN showed Palestinians cheering the death and destruction of 11 September. The scenes were repeated throughout the day and around the world to sow hatred against the "callous" Palestinians.

Now it turns out that it used footage from 1991 and just claimed that it was today's footage. A contributor to CounterPunch (edited by Alexander Cockburn) reports that he and his colleagues had compared this tape with one from 1991 showing Palestinian cheering, and found them to be identical.

THEY CANT SEE WHY THEY ARE HATED

Nearly two days after the horrific suicide attacks on civilian workers in New York and Washington, it has become painfully clear that most Americans simply don't get it. From the president to passersby on the streets, the message seems to be the same: this is an inexplicable assault on freedom and democracy, which must be answered with overwhelming force - just as soon as someone can construct a credible account of who was actually responsible.

Dozens of anti-Muslim attacks were reported throughout the United States in an ugly backlash to the terror attacks in New York and Washington.

Police turned back 300 marchers - some waving American flags and shouting "USA! USA!" - as they tried to march on a mosque in this southwest Chicago suburb late Wednesday.

BIN LADIN WARNS AMERICA

07.09.2001

Osama Bin Laden has warned the United States that it will never enjoy security unless Islamic territories are also safe.

'...To America I say I swear by God the great... America will never taste security and safety unless we feel security and safety in our lands and in Palestine.'

In a statement broadcast on Al Jazeera television, thought to have been recorded during daylight hours on Sunday, Bin Laden said the United States had declared war on Islam and called on Muslims to support their religion.

The statement was also broadcast on CNN television shortly after US President George Bush announced retaliatory attacks on Afghanistan had begun.
