Du'a - The weapon of the believer: PART 3

Bilan โ€”

Salaam again! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

August 8th - Chapter 5: The Etiquette of Du'a

There are a number of manners and etiquette procedures that accompany the performances of du'a. The difference between this part and the previous one ( part 2) is that such etiquette occurs while a person is making du'a, whereas the acts mentioned previously must occur before a person makes du'a.

1. Praising Allah Before the Du'a and Praying upon the prophet(saw)

The person who is making the du'a is asking for forgiveness, mercy and sustenance from his Creator, so it behoves that the worshipper to start his du'a with the praise and glorification of Allah.

The prophet(saw) said to a man worshipping in the mosque, (who after praying made du'a to Allah): "You have been hasty, O worshipper! When you finish your prayer, then sit down and praise Allah with the praise that He is worthy of, and pray upon me, then state your dua."

1.1 Du'a with Allah's Greatest Name

Buraydah narrated that the prophet(saw) heard a person say: "O Allah! I ask you, by virtue of the fact that I testify that You are Allah.. (theres more to this hadith that I left out)

He(saw) said: "This person has asked Allah by is Greatest Name, which if He is asked with, He gives and if He is petitioned with (i.e., a du'a), He answers."

Another point that can be inferred from this is the permissibility of tawassul (see previous part) with ones belief (iman), since the wording of the hadith is "I ask You, by virtue of the fact that I testify that you are Allah"

2.Raising One's Hands

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: "As for the prophet(saw) raising his hands in du'a, then this has been narrated in so many ahadith that they cannot be counted!"

Furthermore, Salman al-Farsi said that the prophet(saw) said: Indeed, Allah is Shy and Beneficent. He is Shy when His servant raises his hands to Him (in du'a) to return them empty, dissapointed!"

*It is important that one's palms face upwards, and not the back of one's hands

There are 3 different types of motions that are narrated from the Companions.

1- The first type is to point with one's forefinger, without necessarily lifting one's hands. This action is done when one asks for forgiveness, or makes a general dhikr, or while making du'a during the khuthbah or during the tashahud. Also it is not sunnah to raise one's hands for the general du'as of the day.

2- The second type is to raise one's hands to the level of one's shoulders, with the palms facing up. This is done for regular du'as that one makes at any time

3- The last type of action is done only in extreme situations, such as asking for rain after drought etc. In this case the hands are stretched forth towards the sky, without joining the two palms together. When this is done, a person's armpits become exposed.

3. Facing the Qiblah

A person is encouraged to turn towards the Qiblah as the prophet(saw) used to do so when making du'a

4. Performing Wudu

5. To Cry

6. To Expect the Best from Allah

Aby Hurayrah narrates that the prophet said: " Allah, all Glory and Praise be to Him has said 'Whatever My servant assumes of Me, that is how I will treat him and I amd with him who remembers Me'"

A person should help himself to achieve this state by always recalling the texts (of the Quran and sunnah) that show the great Mercy of Allah.

The prophet(saw) states: "Let not any of you die excpet that he assumes the best from Allah"

Since a person doesnt know when he will die, the implication is that a muslim must always assumes the best about his Creator.

Ibn al-Qayyim said "For only when a person expects the best from Allah will he perform good deeds since he will expect that Allah will reward him for his deeds and accept them so the more good deeds he does!"

In Hackney, shops were attacked, and there were skirmishes as youths threw objects including chairs and pieces of wood at officers in riot gear.

Cars and bins were set alight, and contents from the bins were used as missiles by the offenders.

At one point, several people broke into the back of a stationary lorry.

They pulled its contents out onto the road, and some hurled it at police, while others used it to smash windows of a parked bus.

Arrests In Enfield Amid Looting And Violence

Extra police have been deployed to Enfield to handle clashes that have broken out this evening after a night of rioting in nearby Tottenham.

At least 200 youths are believed to be in the area Enfield High Street where shop windows have been smashed and a police car attacked.

Scotland Yard confirmed several people have been arrested after looting in the borough.

It said earlier it has an operation in place across the capital tonight, with "high visibility" patrols being carried out.

Additional officers will be stationed in Tottenham throughout the night.

Hours of violence saw around 300 people battle police in north London on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday.

Mark Duggan's Brother Shaun Hall

It followed a protest over the fatal shooting of local man Mark Duggan.

The 29-year-old father-of-four died on Thursday after he was shot by police.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation into the incident is under way.

The IPCC, which is expected to make a statement later this evening on the fatal shooting, has said a non-police firearm was found at the scene of Mr Duggan's death.

Tottenham residents have told Sky News they were in fear for their lives as shops were looted, police cars and a bus set alight and petrol bombs thrown at officers.

Scotland Yard said 26 policemen were injured with eight officers - one suffering head injuries - admitted to hospital. They have all since been discharged.

London Ambulance Service said paramedics treated 11 other people, 10 of whom were taken to hospital.

A total of 55 people have been arrested for offences including violent disorder, burglary and theft.

The violence erupted after more than 100 people staged a vigil for Mark Duggan, marching from the local Broadwater Farm area to Tottenham police station.

Mr Duggan's family has told Sky News they do not condone the rioting.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, the older brother of Mr Duggan called for an end to the violence.

Shaun Hall said he did not want any rioting carried out in his brother's name.

"The family's devastated. We don't want Mark portrayed as some kind of gangster. He was a good man, a family man," he said.

"We do not condone what happened, we are peaceful people

We are grieving and just trying to come to terms with everything that has happened. We do not want this happening in his name."

He added: "I know people are frustrated, they're angry out there... but I would say, please try to hold it down."

The area at the centre of the disorder has been sealed off in Tottenham High Road, where the crowd set fire to buildings, bins and vehicles.

A branch of supermarket Aldi was also set ablaze, and reports said looters had targeted JJB Sports.

Petrol bombs were thrown, shops looted and 26 officers hurt during riots in Tottenham - prompting criticism of the police from the area's MP.

David Lammy said officers should have stepped in earlier to combat "small initial skirmishes" in the disturbance - which followed a protest over the fatal shooting of a man by police

The area at the centre of the disorder has now been sealed off in Tottenham High Road, where a crowd of around 300 had set fire to buildings, bins and vehicles.

Eight of 26 police officers hurt were taken to hospital - with at least one suffering head injuries - after violence that lasted from late on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics had treated a total of 11 people, 10 of whom were taken to hospital. Police say 42 people were arrested.

By the early hours of Sunday, many protesters had moved to nearby Tottenham Hale retail park, where some were spotted looting PC World and JD Sports.

Sky's Simon Newton, in Tottenham, said he saw youths wheeling out televisions and bags of clothes, but that police were not at the scene.

Daylight Looters Caught In The Act
:: Just hours after violence raged yards away in the centre of Tottenham, Sky News cameras caught people brazenly looting a local sports shop in broad daylight.

Around 120 people had earlier staged a vigil for shot man Mark Duggan, marching from the local Broadwater Farm area to Tottenham police station.

The 29-year-old father-of-four died at the scene on Thursday.

Violence escalated shortly after dark, when protesters set fire to two police cars and a double decker bus.

The cars, which were parked around 200 yards from the police station, were set upon shortly after dark.

"I don't think anyone could have forseen that such a peaceful and proper protest vigil would evolve into something like this."

Metropolitan Police commander Adrian Hanstock

Local MP David Lammy condemned "mindless" people involved in the rioting - but also criticised police for their handling of the situation.

"A community that was already hurting has now had the heart ripped out of it," he said.

"Many (of the rioters) were not from Tottenham and had come from far beyond this community, intent on causing violence.

"What happened here on Thursday night raised huge questions and we need answers, but the response to that is not to loot (and) to rob.

"This is an attack on Tottenham and ordinary people. There are questions about the nature of the escalation of this violence and the nature of the policing that led up to it.

"It seemed to go on for many hours before we saw the type of policing that I think is appropriate.

Timeline: Events Leading Up To Riots

"I think small skirmishes initially should have been stopped far quicker."

Metropolitan Police CommanderAdrian Hanstock said: "The death of Mark Duggan was absolutely regrettable.

"A peaceful demonstration was hijacked by a small number of a criminal element, that used that event for their own gain.

"We kept a dignified presence at the vigil. Our preparation was in place and the contingence we had needed to be proportionate to the levels of concern we had in the community.

"It was violence that could not have been anticipated on that scale. As soon as we saw the level, we moved all our available resources, bearing in mind this was at midnight on a Sunday.

"I don't think anyone could have forseen that such a peaceful and proper protest vigil would evolve into something like this."

Downing Street issued a statement condemning the violence as "utterly unnacceptable".

It all kicked off at 8.20pm on Saturday night. Many hours later, written words dribbled out from Downing Street and the Home Office. But where were the ministers?

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Missiles were thrown at them. One was set alight and one was pushed into the middle of the High Road."

A branch of Aldi supermarket was also set on fire, and reports indicated looters had targeted JJB Sports.

The Met opened their Gold Command Control centre, in south London - normally only used for major incidents, such as the Royal wedding and the student protests.

Du'a - The weapon of the believer: PART 2

Bilan โ€”

Salaam and welcome back! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ (knew you couldn't keep away :p)

Good news..we have started a new chapter. Bad news..there is none! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

August 7th - Chapter 4: The Pre-Conditions of Du'a

Just like a person's salat will not be accepted if he performs the necessary pre-requisites,likewise a person's du'a will likely not be accepted until thes pre-requisites are met.(However it is possible that a du'a is accepted even if some conditions have not been met as the response of a du'a depends on the Will of Allah, and He responds to whom He pleases. Therefore it is also possible that that a muslim who fulfills all these conditions is not responded to, but the person who strives to do so, will have a greater chance of their du'a being answered)

1. The Realisation that Only Allah Responds to Du'a

This is the essence of tawhid al-i'tiqadi or the tawhid of one's belief. A person must believe that only Allah is capable of hearing his prayer and granting him what he desires.

2. Sincerity in Du'a to Allah alone

This is the essence of tawhid al-amali or the tawhid of one's actions

3. To perform Tawassul Properly

Tawassul is performed bt mentioning Allah's Names and Attributes, or by mentioning a good deed that a person has done, or by asking a living pious person to make du'a on his behalf.

4. Lack of Hastiness

To be hasty in one's prayer is a cause of rejection of the du'a. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the prophet(saw) said: "The du'a of any worshipper will continue to to be responded to, as long as he does not ask for a sin or breaking the ties of kinship, and as long as he is not hasty." He(saw) was asked what does it mean to be hasty? He(saw) responded: " A worshipper says 'I have prayed and prayed, and I don't see that it will be accepted' so he gives up hope of being answered, and leaves du'a."
A person should avoid giving up du'a just because it has not been responded to. This does not mean that a person should not pray that his du'a be answered quickly, for it has been authentically narrated that the prophet(saw) prayed for rain and said: "..quickly,a and not delayed.."

5. Du'a for Things that are Good

As mentioned earlier, a du'a will be responded to as long as it does not ask for a sin or the breaking the ties of kinship

6.To Have Good Intentions

Abdullah ibn Amr narrates that the prophet(saw) used to say this du'a when visiting the sick: " O Allah! Cure your servant so-and-so, for he will then inflict a wound on an enemy, or walk for your sake to the prayer" So the purpose for which the cure is asked is so that the sick person my aid the religion once he is cured. So have the best of intentions when asking for your du'a.

7. The Presence of an Attentive heart

The prophet(saw) said: " Make du'a to Allah in a state that you are certain that your du'a will be responded to, and know that Allah does not respond to a du'a that originates from a negligent, inattentive heart."
One should not be in a state where he does not know what he is saying or using memorised sentences that he keeps repeating without understanding and appreciation of them.

8. Purity of One's Sustenance

The prophet(saw)mentioned a traveller(to the sahaba) on a long journey, who is dishevelled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands to the sky, saying, "O my Lord! O my Lord!"-while bis food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully; how can he be answered?

Therefore among the necessary conditions for any du'a to be accepted is the purity and lawfulness of ones' food.

9.Prayer Upon the Prophet

A statement of the prophet(saw) in which he said: "Every du'a is covered until(the person) prays upon the prophet(saw). Covering of the du'a means that it is not raised up to Allah until the person accompanies it with the prayer upon the prophet. (Note: It is not a necessary condition to pray upon the prophet(saw) during every du'a but it is recommended as this hadith narrates: "There is no worshipper who prays upon me once, except that Allah prays upon him ten times!")

10.That the Du'a does not Interfere with Something Important

So, when one hears the call to prayer, one must respond to it and not use the excuse that he is making du'a. Likewisem if a person makes du'a and his parents call for him, responding to one's parents takes precedence.

Somalia's al-Shabab rebels leave Mogadishu

You โ€”

Somalia's al-Shabab Islamist rebels have pulled out of all positions in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, government and rebel spokesmen say.

President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed declared the rebels defeated after they left overnight on trucks.

However, al-Shabab described the move as a "change of military tactics".

The conflict has hampered aid efforts in the famine-hit country, with the militia barring some aid agencies from central and southern areas it controls.

Hadith explanation please.

RI_RS โ€”

Hi, I was just reading through some ahadith in my Sahih Bukhari Hadith book app, or whatever it's called, and I came across this Hadith that seemed odd to me. Now because its just a phone app, it could be incorrect or wrongly input or something or I'm just being dense or whatever.

21.Vol 2, Book 25, No 653

Narrated Anas bin Malik: We were (in the funeral procession) of one of the daughters of the prophet and he was sitting by the side of the grave. I saw his eyes shedding tears. He said, "Is there anyone among you who did not have sexual relations with his wife last night?" Abu Talha replied in the affirmative. And so the prophet told him to get down in the grave. And so he got down in her grave.

What does that mean. That he's pure or something so he should get in the grave or what? :S
