Oh What A lovely war... Unless GI'S Are Dying
By Brian Reade, The Mirror, Apr 15 2004
NOW coffins are spilling onto the tarmac and spoiling their TV dinners, Americans have had enough.
Now that Midwest GI girls have lost their pretty lil' GI sister, Saving Private Ryan comes to mind along with the hideous realities of war, so they want to get the hell outta there and get back to the ball game.
The folks who elect the guy who runs the world can accept many things done abroad in their name. A My Lai massacre, even an Hiroshima, but not another Vietnam. Because that puts at risk the only lives that matter. American.
And we wonder why so many Muslims hate them and, thanks to Tony Blair, us. How would you feel about a people who authorise their government to bomb an Arab country into submission for no reason, yet only become concerned about the sanctity of human life when their own professional killers fall in numbers? How about watching the West go misty-eyed at the sight of US soldiers humbly praying over the dead body of a colleague, then shrugging their shoulders when scores of Iraqi civilians are incinerated by American bombs as they pray in their mosque?
It tells the Muslim world that the 13,000 Iraqis already killed in this conflict, and the 700 wiped out in the siege of Fallujah, mean nothing.
They may be somebody's babies, mothers and grandads, but they ain't theirs. And what's more, it doesn't goddam matter. Because their way is good. Your way bad. Their Christ real. Your God imaginary.
The truth is America only takes notice of what it sees in between the adverts on its own TV sets. Well, I hope they note what they see tomorrow, live from The White House. And I hope it makes them, and the rest of the world, retch.
Bush and Blair, fresh from their Easter holidays, will tell us how vital it is to salvage a future for Iraq, when all they want saved is their political skins. They will talk about the insurgents in Iraq being the enemies of freedom, and paint themselves as great liberators, when what they have done there is occupy, repress and emasculate a proud people, rape their natural resources, ban their newspapers, and steal their dignity via the butt of a rifle and the bombs from F-14 jets.
They will claim they are uniting Iraq when all they have united is two rival factions, the Shi'ites and Sunnis, in the common cause of spilling outsiders' blood.
And the carnage and chaos is purely down to them because they never had a clue what to do once the Shock'n'Awe roadshow had reminded the world which country had the biggest d**k.
They had no plan for post-Saddam Iraq, because they were too busy twisting arms, massaging dossiers and inventing reasons to topple him.
A year ago this week the draft-dodging Texan stood in combats on an aircraft-carrier and told his troops it was Mission Accomplished in Iraq. And the intellectual pigmy really believed it was.
He will stand with Blair tomorrow, surrounded by regalia that portrays them as noble leaders of the free world. Yet they are pathological liars. An insult to humanity.
They are to blame for every death in this unnecessary conflict and the fact they can't admit it, or apologise for it, denies them the right ever to be trusted again.
