why do we watch tv?

so why do you watch TV? have you ever thought abt it? the first reason you might come up with is "for entertainment" but i'd like you to think abt it more deeply and if that;s still your answer then please define entertainment.

and i'll define TV: not jsut the plasma screen, im including anything you watch ever.

do feel free to categorise your watching and talk abt them individually. documentaries, non fiction, fiction.

i realise i watch fiction as a mean to escape reality. pretty sad. wonder what that says abt me. then i get annoyed at myself, "why were you watching someone else's life, actually SOMEONE THAT DOESNT EVEN EXIST's fake life" that really annoys me. that those people arent even real. as in, the characters. urgh.

i would recommend anyone and everyone to watch bang goes the theory though (NOT the big bang theory...)

Because i'm tired, i don't want to do anything else and i want to watch things for the sake of watching something?

I usually watch REAL things, like documentaries or a series in which REAL things are happening. I don't really like any of the soaps that they have around and quite frankly i have no idea what they're about anyway AND i don't have the energy and time to put stuff like that into my daily or weekly timetable.

But i do watch some things like Doctor Who because that is SO SO SO interesting BUT i haven't watched it in ages because once again, i don't have time. I used to watch Merlin with my sisters once upon a time too. But then he died so i thought he wasn't coming back again. Is Merlin still around?

I'll watch Masterchef but because it comes on every week and too frequently, i can't keep up with it, so i begin by watching the first three episodes and then i'll just skip the middle section and watch the finals. There's also that baking one with the cute grandma?

Then The Apprentice, which is on right now, but i will watch it on iPlayer along with You're Fired. I've been keeping up with the series for some time, maybe three to four years back even. I just like watching it and i love the drama that occurs between the candidates. I find it really funny watching them arguing over the big table. It's good fun.

Then i watch the occassional things like Panorama documentaries or The toughest place to be a x, y and z or JUNIOR DOCTORS because i'm inspired by these medics or even Britain's Got Talent - I have to say the Shadow Act in the first episode was SO AWESOME.

I *think* that's about all i watch. Call me boring or whatever you like, but i chose not to watch anything else.

Intoxication.

It occupies the mind and passes time.

I am not a big fan of watching "productive" TV (apart from news).

Sometimes I just need something going on in the background to create an up-tempo atmosphere and momentary relief if my brain's racing and my body lethargic. But as for the shows I don't miss, I do find them entertaining in the sense that they amuse or inform me. I don't think there's a problem with wanting to be amused, but it is a good question anyway, because it shouldn't be a terribly high priority and probably isn't the healthiest pick-up or diversion. Most other forms of leisure are more useful, hobbies offering benefits including creativity, education, exercise or socialising. A lot of my viewing is wasted time, and I'm a sucker. Occasionally a programme is so intelligent as to constitute a cultural landmark, educating and impacting society for the better - same can be said of a good book or play. Cheers for asking. Smile

I hardly ever watch TV. If I do its only out of sheer boredom and to take my mind off stress-related stuff. I can't keep track of episodes either. Though now I've figured its a waste of time.

I've cut down on what I watch on tv but I do mostly watch it for entertainment - pleasure. Sometimes to avoid reality too, I guess.

Otherwise, when I'm alone and I'm eating something I try to find something for the background noise because I don't like the complete silence and loneliness :/ or similarly if I am alone, and I've got nothing better to do, I'll look to see if there's anything good on.

I like watching documentaries for educational purposes too

There is something i want to share regarding TV's that I've read many times. I will have to dig out that book, find the right page and post it for the rest of you to see.
