World leaders have enjoyed a five-course meal on the eve of a G8 summit on tackling world food shortages, a menu released by a summit source showed.

The leaders will be joined by representatives of African countries for Friday's session at the G8 summit focusing on food, security and development issues.

The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said earlier this week, "A hunger emergency looms and the world must act."

Nearly 3 million children in poverty in Britain

Nearly a million children would like to invite a friend around for tea or a snack once in a while – but their family is unable to afford this. More than half a million children do not celebrate their birthday or special occasion because of lack of money.

Colette Marshall, director at the charity Save the Children, said: "It is outrageous that so many children continue to miss out on the basic necessities most children take for granted.

"In 2001 Gordon Brown referred to child poverty as a 'scar on Britain's soul'. This scar is taking a very long time to heal."

Every city should have its own Boris

Every Large city should have its own Boris, say the Tories

England's 12 largest cities would be given the chance to elect their own equivalent of Boris Johnson under Tory plans to introduce more directly elected mayors.

Under the plans, voters in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield and Bristol would be among those given a guaranteed referendum on handing authority to a powerful city supremo modelled on the Mayor of London. Bradford, Wakefield, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne will also be able to vote to choose a mayoral system. Voters will also be given the power to trigger a referendum on any local policy.
