No Regrets

I just wanted to share some song lyrics I like.

No Regrets
by Aesop Rock

Lucy was 7 and wore a head of blue barettes
City born, into this world with no knowledge and no regrets
Had a piece of yellow chalk with which she'd draw upon the street
The many faces of the various locals that she would meet
There was joshua, age 10
Bully of the block
Who always took her milk money at the morning bus stop
There was Mrs. Crabtree, and her poodle
She always gave a wave and holler on her weekly trip down to the bingo
parlor
And she drew
Men, women, kids, sunsets, clouds
And she drew
Skyscrapers, fruit stands, cities, towns
Always said hello to passers-by
They'd ask her why she passed her time
Attachin lines to concrete
But she would only smile
Now all the other children living in or near her building
Ran around like tyrants, soaking up the open fire hydrants
They would say
"Hey little Lucy, wanna come jump double dutch?"
Lucy would pause, look, grin and say
"I'm busy, thank you much"
Well, well, one year passed
And believe it or not
She covered every last inch of the entire sidewalk,
And she stopped-
"Lucy, after all this, you're just giving in today??"
She said:
"I'm not giving in, I'm finished," and walked away

You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it

Lucy was 37, and introverted somewhat
Basement apartment in the same building she grew up in
She traded in her blue barettes for long locks held up with a clip
Traded in her yellow chalk for charcoal sticks
And she drew
Little bobby who would come to sweep the porch
And she drew
The mailman, delivered everyday at 4
Lucy had very little contact with the folks outside her cubicle day
But she found it suitable, and she liked it that way
She had a man now: Rico, similar, hermit
They would only see each other once or twice a week on purpose
They appreciated space and Rico was an artist too
So they'd connect on saturdays to share the pictures that they drew
(Look!)
Now every month or so, she'd get a knock upon the front door
Just one of the neighbors,
Actin nice, although she was a strange girl, they would
Say, "Lucy, wanna join me for some lunch??"
Lucy would smile and say "I'm busy, thank you much"
And they would make a weird face the second the door shut
And run and tell their friends how truly crazy Lucy was
And Lucy knew what people thought but didn't care
Cuz while they spread their rumors through the street
She'd paint another masterpiece

You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it

Lucy was 87, upon her death bed
At the senior home, where she had previously checked in
Traded in the locks and clips for a head rest
Traded in the charcoal sticks for arthritis, it had to happen
And she drew no more, just sat and watched the dawn
Had a television in the room that she'd never turned on
Lucy pinned up a life worth's of pictures on the wall
And sat and smiled, looked each one over, just to laugh at it all
Now Rico, he had passed, 'bout 5 years back
So the visiting hours pulled in a big flock o' nothin
She'd never spoken once about the spanning of her life
Until the day she leaned forward, grinned and pulled the nurse aside
And she said:
"Look, I've never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven't pursued
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done
So i've been the dream that I wanted to be since day one!"
Well!
The nurse jumped back,
She'd never heard Lucy even talk,
'Specially words like that
She walked over to the door, and pulled it closed behind
Then Lucy blew a kiss to each one of her pictures
And she died.

You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it

Rap is just poetry with a beat. What's wrong with that? If you had said you didn't like gangsta rap I would have agreed with you, but this song is cleary not gangsta rap.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

I love you too man! tear rolls down face.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane, by those who couldn't hear the music...

Here's another one I love, and can really relate to:

When We Were Friends
by Cee-Lo

When we were friends, the days would begin and end,
We went from boys to men, were boys 'til then,
We knew each other real, we knew each other rules,
And we wore each other's clothes and each other's shoes,
But in an instant, the days become distant,
Your path doesn't go in the same direction his went,
And can't help but be scared,
Of the virtually unknown up ahead,
But I'll be fine,
Whether it is favor or failure, it must be mine,
Well he can stand still, if that's how that man feel,
Cuz whatever can't can't, and whatever can will,
So I'm walking towards my future with my back to it,
Hoping you look up and see me as a reason to do it,
That you get grown is a given,
You damn near gotta do the same thing for a living,

He's my cousin I love him like a son cause I was him,
And he thinks his thuggin' pleases me but it doesn't,
How could I applaud it when I had caused it,
But if it's God's plan for him, I guess I ain't caused it,
for what I gave him - wasn't so bad I couldn't save him,
Either they'll enslave him or a gun'll grave him,
I still believe in him but he think I'm leaving him,
When I'm busy he thinks I'm bob-n-weaving him,
I probably sound like his daddy,
But over the phone, cause I ain't around - like his daddy,
When we talk I wanna hear you be productive,
Conversate for hours about something constructive,
But it never comes up,
With all them guys round your neck you ain't gon' never come up,
Maybe I'm jealous cause you love them more,
Can't understand what you love them for,
Don't get me wrong you know I love them too,
But you know who I always hold above them: you,
And it ain't nobody business,
I'll just make believe that music can miraculously mend this
So I'll be a sound
And then you do your thing to it and we mix it down
And make a song my brother, cause even when I'm away I'll always be around

Don't just do something! Stand there.

Making Progress
by Blackalicious

As I embark on life's journey from the point where I'm at
Peace to everybody strivin to live right and exact
Even though anxieties try to pull you down
See your troubles as a blessin and you're homeward bound
Everybody gotta struggle, that's the way of the world
Can't develop biceps if you don't do curls
Can't achieve a a garden if you never water your crops
If you never paid your dues, then you don't get props
Couldn't eat a proper meal without cookin it first
Can't receive a paycheck if you don't do work
If it wasn't for the rain, then the trees won't grow
When the spring came around, what a sight to bestow
When you face adversities, dark clouds won't last
If you never study, how do you expect to pass?
The grasshopper laid around while the ants did chores
When the winter came around, he was left outdoors
See the cycle keeps moving like a big machine
Evolution of the mind, soul body and being
God'll never put upon you more than you can take
Sometimes you even gotta learn from OTHER people's mistakes
So head on people got to meet the task
Educate, keep learnin, gotta question, ask!
And let your light keep shinin and remember the past
By any means necessary, we'll be free at last

Don't just do something! Stand there.

First in Flight
by Blackalicious

Cause all we got is rhythm and time
We go beyond the edge of the sky

FREE! Like a bird out in the wind in the night
Like a 747 to LA that's in flight
FREE! Like a garden flourishing in the wind
Like a student about to do it when he's graduatin'
FREE! From any of the energy perception
Can never be defined create the definition within
FREE! Just lovin' life itself and never pretend to be
Anything other than the man I was meant to be
Travel through time and get a glimpse of the centuries
To come a better day is promised, remember?
FREE! Like my nephew in a few months about to be out the penitentiary
Meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation, meditation,

Cause all we got is rhythm and time
We go beyond the edge of the sky

UH! I never hesitate about a reluctant mind
Just put the peddle to the metal see what ya find
You back there slouchin over won't you pick up your spine?
Let's make it really really happen live up this time
Cause you can choose to say "Good morning God" or "Good God, morning"
With black clouds storming
I walk without umbrellas into these woods
Don't need em cause the mighty trees will shelter me good
I'm eating berries from the bushes of the heavenly good
From the steaks the power came to us whenever we stood
Reverberatin out we're reachin each and every hood
Whenver we could the spiritual anatomy fool
But never take the credit for it B cause that'd be rude
It's just the way in life we searchin for that had to be new
You gotta work it though cause everyday ain't Saturday fool
Evolve into a better life and be happy with you and me

Cause all we got is rhythm and time
We go beyond the edge of the sky

Don't just do something! Stand there.
