Approaching a Non-Muslim

Salaam ppl, hows it going? Inshaallah everyone's good health.

The other day a non-muslim friend of randomly text me and asked me when ramadhan was and then said to me she wants to fast with me, she said she doesn't know why, but shes always wanted to visit a temple (I assumed she meant a mosque) and that she think she can do it. I told her if she ever wanted to go to a mosque or want any books let me know.

Now I don't wanna overread into this, I don't even know if she's still gonna feel the same next time I see her so I'm not thinking of the "C" or "R" word (however you wanna look at it) yet. I only wanna help her out as a mate and then she can decide what she wanna do. I was thinking of buying her a book that explains ramadhan. Something easy to read, but there are so many books out there I don't know which one to buy, so any advice ppl on any specific books you think would be good?

And to any con or reverts on the site, I'd appreciate any help and advice you can give especially.

Jazak Allah Khair in advance

safe ppl

Salaam
When you deal with non-muslims particularly atheists try not to talk about religion all the time thats one way of pushing them away rather when they want to talk about religion be more than eager to do so. In this particular case why dont you refer her to a sister who can spend time with her and let her get to know about islam at the same time creating the sister creating a relationship with her and pushing you away from any potential sin.

People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid.

Wonderful advice.

C or R word??

How about Islam for Dummies?? lol. I dunno, you just wanna start of with something simple and basic.

I think the reasoning behind alot of the prohibitions in Islam need explaining to non-muslims before they 'get it'.

This may sound silly, but have you asked her why?

I can handle clouds, but cant fight with an eclipse.

I would first introduce her to the brotherhood/sisterhood in Islam first. Show that a good practising Muslim can be interesting. Before praying at College me and my Muslim friends sit and chat for a bit, this guy my friend knows, wants to convert, he's on the fence. So my friend suggested that he comes and sees us do our pre-salah chat, so he knows that Islam is actually quite down to earth and not some cult!
If you mosque has a women section then you can take her there for Taraweh prayers. And let her observe.

Chin up, mate! Life's too short.

Not Taraweh strait away IMO. Its quite difficult to stay awake for some people. and everyone is smelly after a whole day fasting (not to mention the fact that it will finish after midnight!)

Maghrib prayer when everyone is breaking their fast is better. If she wants to try fasting for a day, she can break fast with a bunch of sisters, it will be a really good introduction to brother/sisterhood.

This website is good for non-Muslims/converts:

Winter is the Springtime of the Muslim. Because Allah (swt) has made the nights long for worship, and the days short for fasting!

I personally think it would be better if you brought her a beginners book which also explains the various terminologies. Let her read it for herself and make up her mind instead of different ppl giving her their version of what ramzaan is. Im sure if you go into any Islamic bookstore and look in the kids section your bound to find a book that explains it really well.

Why is everyone making the assumption this girl wants to convert, maybe she is just curious.

Good point. I know lots of people who have know a lot of converts, and they say that they thank Allah (swt) that they found Islam before they met any Muslims. i.e. some Muslims can seem absolutely terrible and off-putting. Just look at the newspapers.

Disagree with the 'childrens' books. Don't want to patronise her.

Pick up 'Purpose of Life' DVD form Khalid Yasin. tell her to watch it. Many people won't want to read a book but will be happy with a DVD. You can get it from most Islamic book shops. I think you can download it here:

Who is? If she's interested, she's just gonna get a few books/DVDs and observe a few Muslims, Inshallah, noone#s gonna force her to convert, you know.

We were taking part in Ashura marches in London and Birmingham and many non-muslims asked us so many questions. Two of them one boy and one girl both white wanted to convert because they liked Shia Muslim way of mourning and beating our chest.

They asked questions and we sent the girl to women section in the mosque and boys stayed with us.

We asked him to read the Shia creed and he did.

We were not marching to convert people but if they want to become Muslims that thats their choice.

I think its better to start off with a really basic book (ie a kids book) especially when you have no/little knowledge of a particular matter. The adult books tend to just get stuck right in whereas the kids book start from the beginning and explain certain words. Once you have graped the basics then you can go onto the more lengthy books There aint no shame in starting off with basic books from the kids section, ive brough some for my sister and brother who are 16 and 14. Ive even read them myself coz there are words that i dont understand.

Khlid Yasin now he is one funny dude. I remember going to one of his talks last year and something that he said I didnt really agree with. I think the best thing to do is perhaps give her DVDs produced by different scholars so as to get different views on the same matter.

I just kind got the feeling from ppls post that your assuming she wants to convert. As for observing muslims i think thats a bad idea.

@ Malik i think you need to be careful who your inviting and what exactly your expecting an individual to do once they have converted to Islam. This is the reason why.

I don't agree with everything he says either, but 'Purpose of Life' is not about fiqh or anything that causes disagreements. There are no 'different views on the matter', it is merely presenting proofs of Islam in an interesting way. MANY of my friends who have later converted have said that this DVD was very powerful and made them closer to becoming Muslims.

Plus, he speaks good English with an easy-to-understand accent, which puts him apart from about 95% of other scholars.

Do you think introducing her to Baba Ali is a good idea?
just out of interest what did he say, is he a bit like Abdul Rahim Green (no offence to the guy ment) ?

True true hes very much in touch with the difficulties that the youth face and how to overcome them. Plus he talks the youth lingo which i think is why a lot of ppl connect with him plus he adds humour which is always good. Come to think about it hes a revert himself so maybe the talk about Islam coming from a revert would be much better.

Anyway you probs know better then me Very Happy

My friend's got one, I can find out from him insha'Allah... but I warn you it is REALLY big and bulky.

If you think about it, it is at least 33% more text... Can't you print off the transliteration from websites or something?

Use the transliteration in the meantime but try and enrol into a tajweed course soon InshaAllah.

Listen to recitation aswell. One of my favourite reciters is Mishary.

If you could do tht bro then I'd appreciate it. My printer is on the fritz and I'd rather just by the book then print bare pages off.
