No charges over Cruise squirting

Actor Tom Cruise has said he will not press charges against the TV film crew who squirted him with water at the War of the Worlds premiere in London.

Four TV workers were arrested after the 42-year-old actor's face and jacket were drenched with water from a fake microphone on Sunday.

Channel 4 later apologised to Cruise for the stunt, which was filmed for a comedy show.

Cruise - who attended the premiere with his new fiancee Katie Holmes - was talking to journalists in Leicester Square when he was squirted with water.

The star struggled to maintain his composure, repeatedly asking one of the Channel 4 team: "Why would you do that?"

He said: "What's so funny about that? It's ridiculous. Do you like making less of people?

"I'm here giving you an interview, answering your questions and you do something nasty. You're a jerk."

The actor held the interviewer back and repeatedly called him "a jerk".

A Channel 4 spokesman later said the incident was not intended to cause offence and was "very much in a spirit of fun".

personally I think the guys getting too big for his boots

if ur in the public eye u gotta take the good as well as the bad

he should have laughed it off

Nah I think he had all right to be a bit angry.

After all if you were working, and someone decided it was a good laugh to squirt some water on you, how would you take it? Now what if it was recorded on camera to be broadcast around the world?

I think he behaved as a gentleman. He questioned why he was squirted, and asked how it ws funny.

You can use the prescott egging example as what he could have done.

if i was a celebrity with millions of fans around the world and if i had a camera in my face

i would have laughed it off

and btw gentlemen dont call others "jerks"

Being a celeb does not mean you have to ignore all types of abuse.

Now calling someone a 'jerk' IMO is a controlled response. There are much more potent words you can use.

(PS In general I do not even like the guy. And I positively hate his stupid grin that he is always doing.)

"abuse"? it was a bit of water squirted in his face

anyway it was a JOKE

where's ur a sense of humour? he'd be a bigger man if he laughed about it

It was not a funny joke.

laughing it off is possible, but you must admit that it can always be taken the wrong way. I totally understand his annoyance. You are suggesting he had no right to be annoyed.

No, a joke can always be taken the wrong way.

The Scientologists have an office in Birmingham city centre.

They tried to recruit me once. They were supposed to talk to me for 5 mins but I kept at them for almost an hour trying to defunct what they were saying.

Later I found out that they purposely lie in order dodge argumentative questions.

Lol…that’s true.

He is a shorty, can’t be any more than 5f 3in. I’ve heard diminutive men are more likely to have bad tempers.

If only Mr Cruise was a little taller he might find a sense of humour

Indians 'world's biggest readers'

Indians are the world's biggest bookworms, reading on average 10.7 hours a week, twice as long as Americans, according to a new survey.

The NOP World Culture Score index surveyed 30,000 people in 30 countries from December 2004 to February 2005.

Analysts said self-help and aspirational reading could explain India's high figures.

Time spent on reading meant fewer hours watching TV and listening to the radio - India came fourth last in both.

The NOP survey of 30,000 consumers aged over 13 saw China and the Philippines take second and third place respectively in average hours a week spent reading books, newspapers and magazines.

Britons and Americans scored about half the Indians' hours and Japanese and Koreans were even lower - at 4.1 and 3.1 hours respectively.

Housework looms for Spanish men

Spanish men who refuse to lift a finger around the house are facing new legal sanctions.

MPs in Spain have drawn up a marriage contract for use in civil ceremonies which obliges men to share household chores and the care of children and elderly family members.

The new law, which will be introduced this summer in Spain, promises a revolution in a country where nearly half of all men admit to doing no housework at all.

Puffing and panting and swearing under his breath, 36-year-old Santi Risco tries to put up an ironing board. He doesn't have much success and it's a pretty painful sight watching a previously undomesticated Spanish male trying hard to change with the times.

"Spanish law is changing so men have to do 50% of the housework," Santi tells me, rather red-faced. "I am getting married this autumn so I am learning things I've never done before: ironing, cleaning floors and doing the washing up.

"It's not that I'm a macho man. It's just that I've never been taught these things before."

"I don't like the new law at all," says Patricia, a schoolteacher. "I love macho men. They are more masculine and I don't care about doing some housework."

Almudena Rodriguez del Llano, a spokeswoman for the group Women for Democracy says: "This law is ridiculous and impossible to enforce.

"What is a woman going to do if her husband doesn't help her at home? March to the local police station and report him? You can just imagine the expression on the faces of the officers on duty, can't you?"

One man who has already put down his beer and put on an apron is Santi. Hard at work at the kitchen sink and with Aintzane keeping a watchful eye, I found him practising his new marriage vows: To love, to cherish and to do the washing-up.

men doing ALL the housework whilst the wife puts her feet up is not seen as being macho

(unless she's ill/pregant/busy etc)

BUT at the same time nothing is more off putting then a lazy slob who refuses to lift a finger

TV ads show smoking is 'unsexy'

Risqué TV, radio and billboard ads will be appearing across the UK from July to drill home the message to young people that smoking is not sexy.

Ministers say fears about fertility and attractiveness are stronger motivators for young people to quit than health.

A survey suggests one in two smokers would quit to improve their sex appeal.

The NHS Smoking Helpline questionnaire also revealed that more than two-thirds of young men and women believe smoking makes them less attractive.

Half of men said they associated smoking with wrinkles, bad skin and less enjoyable kissing.

Another of the ads shows stark images of the effect of smoking on women's appearance and attractiveness to men, with messages such as "If you smoke, you stink", "Minging teeth" and "Cat's bum mouth".

Websites called "Staying Hard" and Ugly Smoking" will also be launched, alongside a sticker campaign in pub and club toilets.

However, Simon Clark, director of the smokers' lobby group Forest, said: "To try and suggest that smoking is a major cause of impotence is a scare tactic.

"It's nasty because it is not only setting out to de-normalise smoking, but really to make smokers feel incredibly guilty about their habit."

1. Short Man's Syndrome

Aggression or needless bumptiousness displayed by a man well below average height when it is perceived to be an attempt to compensate for his small size.

"[i]A shorter guy is constantly jostled in a crowd by an unthinking taller guy who sees over his head. Eventually, the shorter guy reacts aggressively by verbally abusing the taller guy. Women feel pain more than men

Women are bigger wimps than men when it comes to pain, research suggests, contrary to the popular notion that the reverse is true.

Not only do they feel pain more easily, women are less able to cope with it, believe scientists at Bath University.

Women focus on the emotional aspects of their pain, which makes it worse, while men tend to focus on the physicality.

Their findings are based on a series of pain tests on 50 men and women using triggers such as ice cold water.

"Women tend to report to pain at lower thresholds than men. We know that we have far more women attending pain clinics than men too.

She said there were many theories to explain the gender difference.

One is that women have an innate caring role and that they are therefore more attuned to recognising pain in themselves as a warning sign in case it is something dangerous that would impair their ability to care for others.

Another theory is that it is down to hormonal differences.

I disagree with the study. If this was the case then no woman would willingly go through labour.

Teacher 'Too Pretty For Jail'

A teacher accused of repeatedly seducing a 14-year-old pupil is too pretty to go to jail, her lawyers argue. Debra Lafave, 24, faces up to 30 years in a Florida jail on charges including lascivious battery. Her lawyer told a pre-trial hearing: "To place Debbie into a state women's penitentiary, to place an attractive young woman in that kind of hellhole, is like putting a piece of raw meat in with the lions."

Ms Lafave, a former pin-up model, will claim she was insane due to emotional stress and did not know right from wrong when she had sex numerous times with Matthew Merchant while she was a middle-school reading teacher.

The boy told investigators they had sex in a classroom, her house and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove.

He said Lafave told him her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed.

The judge agreed to appoint two mental health professionals to evaluate Lafave.

Her trial has been set for December 5.

Cannonball man flies over border

[img] Smith sails across the border, passport in hand

David Smith has an unusual way of crossing the Mexican border into the US - as a human cannonball.

Mr Smith, a professional cannonball, was launched head first across the border between Tijuana, in Mexico, and the US city of San Diego.

His son, also a human cannonball, says Mr Smith is the first person to be fired across an international border.

Mr Smith waved his passport in the air as he sat on the lip of the cannon, before leaving on the brief journey.

'Spatial borders'

The event is the first of a series of public art projects in the two border cities run by the Insite network.

Mr Smith was fired into the sky on Saturday, flying across a rusty border fence from the Mexican beach and landing in a huge net the other side.

Mr Smith said he was inspired by circus performers to explore "the notion of spatial and mental borders".

The US border chief granted Mr Smith special dispensation for crossing into the US in such an unconventional manner.

"I had to make sure to have some kind of official 'OK' high enough up to make sure he doesn't land in the US and go to a federal penitentiary," his son said.

Mr Smith has spawned a family of professional human cannonballs - his son, two daughters and a cousin are all regularly fired from one of five cannons they own.
