Do Not Turn Your Stomachs Into Graveyards

Salaam

Dad did a barbecue last night and barbecued loads of pieces of beef steaks, chicken, kebabs etc

After I’d eaten to my full I began to think about the amount of meat that is consumed in my household…

On a weekly basis we eat meat, chicken, mince, rice with meat/chicken (biryani), some vegetable with meat/chicken and lentils/kidney beans maybe once or twice a week…its rare for two/three nights to go past without meat being cooked. It’d be impossible for a vegetarian to survive in our household.

If I was to eat out I’d either eat Nando’s chicken, I’d select the beef or duck in our Chinese restaurant and even when eating Lebanese or Turkish food it’s usually meat/chicken that I order…

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said that “we should not turn our stomachs into graveyards for animals”.

The Asian community does consume a lot of meat…I have never seen any Asian family NOT serving meat when inviting guests over.

Sometimes I think meat has a sense of superiority attached to it…for instance when we send/receive food to our neighbours, it’s always a meat dish….mum has never sent me to anyone’s house with a bowl of lentils. Some say that lentils are the most “humbling dish” or that “it makes one humble”…

Does anyone personally know a Muslim Asian vegetarian?

Of course it’s important to have a balanced diet, but it is possible to derive protein from red kidney beans and certain vegetables…so it is possible to live without meat.

Too much/too less of anything is a bad thing…does anyone else think that the Muslim Asian community consumes way too much meat?

I’m considering becoming a vegetarian for a month.....I wonder how long I’d last :? .

Wasaalaam

I think most "cultural food" is centered on meat and grain... they are the most readily available substances. Vegetarian stuff is really a product of the modern world and it's something you have to force yourself into.

...on a totally unrelated note I just found out my wife is a distant cousin if mine

LOL, thats funny but cool!

In our house its mostly chicken, I personally can eat things such as potatoes and salad, fish and chips gladly etc. But meat is tasty.....most of our meals involve eating chicken or meat however my dad is even more obsessed with it!

mmm i duno Dave in India Vegetarianism is huge. Most hindus, and even devout Sikhs follow strict veggy diets. It's only since coming to the west have some of these folks started allowing meat, when really their religion doesn't permit it.

I've never been Bangladesh but my husband, and family have told me it's only the wealthy that tend to get meat regularly over there. Most of the common folks can't afford meat. If they're lucky they can go out and catch their own fish, but as for buying red meat, or chicken that would be a rarity saved perhaps for Eid. A typcial meal would be lentils with rice. For the really poor it would be just plain white rice and nothing else.

I think this is part of the reason why Bengalis in the west are known for their extravagant eating habits. Maybe their poverty and lack of food has made them hungry for all the dishes they couldn't afford back home. Most bengali households in the UK won't have 2 saucepans on the table but 6 or more, least that's how my mums always been :? Meat is always on the table, as is fish curry, and fish fried, and a veg dish. Ironically most Bengalis over here now look down upon veg dishes. They wil consume it very rarely, and they would never dream of serving it to guests, they see it as "poor mans food". Sick attitude, and ironic considering that poor man's food kept them alive back home, and now it's not good enough for them?I think it's being wasteful and greedy, but my mum would give me the sandal if she heard that.

And exotic fruits this is the season anyone would think my mum owns the local fruit market, she has boxes of mangoes and watermelons that stacked up. She;s always sending stuff to my house, despite there being only 3 of us she gives enough for t6. So i'm always distributing food to locals, they must think i'm so charitable looool.

I grew up on a largely meat diet. But since getting married i've been forced to change my eating habits. there have been days when i've not been satisfied, felt hungry just coz i never got my meat dose. To tell the truth it's more psychological than anything. Coz a year on i can eat just lentils and rice, or this potato salad dish and rice and be perfectly full. It's down to parents really, they should introduce kids with a balanced diet from a young age, coz that's when our palates acquire tastes likes and dislikes. If we're just given one food group, it's no wonder we'll crave for that one food is it.

P.S Ask a struggling Bengali family in the uk to reduce their expenses they will cut back on everything under the sun, but trust me they won't cut down on their spending sprees for food, even if they were on the dole. It's crazy how much they'd spend on one fish..check out the Bengali markets

Well like I know vegetarianism is big with Jains but is that true for all hinduism?

Meat was traditionally eaten in our culture either by those who could afford it OR on special occasions - eg eid/weddings/aqeeqah etc.

When people came over here, they could afford meat and so bought more of it. It is still associated with being well-off.

Chicken is a scary animal - the way they raise them (especially in Britain) is absolutely frightening... saw a documentary on them and cows once and have always thought twice about a hamburger or kebab.

...before inhaling it like I haven't eaten in weeks.

Ya know I'm always hearing bad health stuff about meat but never vegetables - is anyone aware of any major health issues/warnings about agriculture?

Now that you mention it that's rather more in the like of Europe too, assuming there is any truth to cheesy movies with medieval banquets.

yeah Dave they are as far as i'm aware (on authority of secondary school mates), see here:

Wow... thanks never knew they were so into this not harming stuff idea.

I was always curious if hindus believe that other creatures are at different stages of enlightenment... and part of enlightenment is to not harm other creatures... what are their thoughts on animals that are higher levels of enlightenment but eat other animals?

They do rank animals and people right... that's the thing about the cows?

Or am I thinking too hard about this..

i duno if they rank animals, but yeah they highly revere the cow, you're right about that.

Doesn't poverty and hunger also affect Pakistani's and Indians?

I wouldn't say that....I honestly don't like the taste of vegetables eww.
My parents love vegetables and are always asking me to try it.

What's wrong with fish....My parents are always looking for a bargain lol

Well the GM stuff you have no idea at all wether it will have any ill effects til years after everyone starts to consume them.

I am glad UK supermarkets have made a pledge to not have GM veg's for sale here.

But I here soy used in processed foods is a diferent case...

So that is scary.

And veg's are more healthy. They may make vegetarians look pale though, as if under nourished.

assalamu alaikum,

yes cheeky bro poverty also effects pakistan and india, i was trying to relate the Bengali experience. But i think the reasons are very much the same.

well your parents are a rarity amongst bengalis, syhleti bengalis i mean. Dhakai bengalis consume more veg compared to us lot.

every bengali loves aloo satnee=potatoe chutney/salad. do you know what i'm on about..potatoes are boiled then half roasted on the tawa, and the onions done on the tawa aswell. then its mashed together with roasted chillies herbs and seasoning. Ah i love that..

asians normally over do their vegies. they're cooked to a pulp. I hate the way punabis do their spinach. I swear they pressure cook it into a dark green blob hate the look of it forget the taste.

oi bro don't you like saag? not with spinach with the real deal nalee fathah and a cut of green bengali lemon on the side, ah that will do me for a meal lol. my husband teases me about it says i'm a proper freshy just coz i prefer the bengali leaves to the spinach :x I told him if we move away from my mum he's gona have to get me seeds so i can grow my own.

Well mum and dad used to have a farm in the backyard. Guess they're trying to relive their arabal farming days, over in the uk. Sweet pumpkin grows wicked in my parents yard..anyone like sweet pumpkin? one of my fave dishes is sweet pumpkin chicken curry..boy that goes down well with flat bread made from rice flour...ok im seriously hungry now.

What about aubergines cooked in an unhealthy manner; dipped in batter, fried and eaten wid rice

you guys are gona hate me..i like okra. Slimy it may be but when left slightly on the cruncy side, mild spices it's delicious.

You're mad muslim bro listen to your mother eat your veggies! They can't all be ew, you must like something you just don't know what. You're like one of my brothers. he'll stick his nose up at everything without even trying it. This silly boy wouldn't try pizza for a good 2 yrs/ Then he finally tried it and now it's the next best thing since sliced bread  Now i'm trying to get him to try my lasagne.

P.s nowt wrong with fish..just it costs a lot. Bengalis buy the whole thing. A med sized one is like 15-20 quid..and the big ones 30 quid plus.

Your last post is more like a recipe guide lol

What's the problem in being a freshy....Anyway I also prefer the bengali leaves to the spinach....not that I have tasted spinach before lol

I've tried eating veggies once and spat it out. I think I'll stick to my vitamin tablets for the vitamins and minerals I need.

We do seem to consume quite a bit of meat at our house and its mostly chicken/lamb/mince we will every now and then make a fish dish but thats like once in a blue moon.

But its not all meat, mom will also cook quite a bit of veg aswell... although its mostly accompanied with some sort of meat. But we will occationally make a veg only dish which my bro will turn his nose at.

Funny thing i did go veggie for a month a while back and found it very difficult to eat anything. My mom ended up making a seperate dish for me. But I liked mince too much and eventually gave in.

Moms pretty big on getting us to eat veg, she'll even listen to asian sound radio to get new recipes for dishes and try them out. Mon-Tue some sort of meat dish, Wed-Fri will be either veg dish or takeout, Sat-sun fish and chips and anything else that left over.

lol Dave you're related to her? And you didnt know??

Never occured to check ey? Would have thought you'd catch on once you both met the relies... oh well.

lol well I don't think our great great great grandfather would have been able to attend - and no it never occured to me. See I always think of her as "Mexican" because as long as I can remember she was always in diversity clubs, minority women empowerment activities ( ) and other latina oriented activities - bleeding heart liberals stuff, which I always thought was rather amusing since she's criolla not mestizo and they aren't exactly "oppressed" anyway I'm pretty much exclusively english and that's it - no spanish blood whatsoever so I guess I just ruled it out but I always forget her mother comes from a pretty old french american family.

Always been curious about this - somewhere a while back somebody mentioned Asians have some thing for pumpkin... what's up with that?

I thought it didn't really grow outside the US and I didn't know you could like... eat... it

Never had pumpkin.

But anything with enough chillies can be bearable.

I know its edible, but no idea what it would taste like.
