Taking Advantage of Ramadan

From an email which I thought I'd share on here; A few ways in which you can take advantage of this month, especially the last 10 days;

1) Reserve a Private Meeting with Allah - Set a time before or after suhoor to be alone with Allah (swt).  Use this time to connect to Him by praying, making du`a’, or reading Qur’an. There is no other time like it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One, descends towards the lower heaven and proclaims: ‘Is there anyone supplicating to Me, so that I grant his supplication? Is there anyone begging of Me for anything so that I grant him his wish? Is there anyone who seeks My forgiveness, so that I forgive him?’” [Bukhari and Muslim].

2) Set a Time for Reflection - In the midst of our busy schedule, we seldom find time to stop and relax, let alone reflect on the  realities of life. Make time to do this. Take time to step outside of your daily routine and introspect about where you are and where you’re going.  Reflect on the creation around you and on the  reality of this life, death, and our final meeting with our Creator. Choose a time, such as the last third of the night, when there are no distractions.

3) Increase in recitation of the Quran - If possible, complete a minimum of one part daily so as to make one whole complete recital of the Quran during Ramadan. “The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down, a guidance for the people, and clear verses of guidance and criterion.” Surah Baqarah: 183

4) Sincerity and concentration(khushoo) in salah - is important, devote more time to perfect your salah. Do not rush your salah, every posture in your salah has to be  done properly. Remember that you’re standing in front of your Rab; King of the Universe.

5) Do lots of Astaghfar- it’s human nature to slip. But humility should lead us to the route of repentance. Being arrogant instead of responding to your mistake with responsibility and humility is poisonous to the extent of darkening the heart. Nevertheless Mercy prevails over His wrath; He’s Al Rahman, Al Raheem. Therefore seize your chance; beg Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla for His forgiveness.

6) Stay away from foul languages, lying, gossiping, backbiting, anger - Ubaadah bin Saamit reports: Rasulullah ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam used to teach us these words (dua) when Ramadan approached: Allahumma sallimnee Li Ramadaana wa sallim ramadhaana lee wa sallimhu lee mutaqabbala. ( O Allah! Safeguard me for the month of Ramadan[by making me see the month of ramadan healthy and fit], and safeguard the month of Ramadan for me [by making the conditions in it such that I can take maximum benefit from it] and accept it from me.

7) Don’t Miss the Night of Power - There is a night in the last ten nights of Ramadan that is greater than a lifetime (1000 months, 83.3 years).  The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever prays during the night of Qadr(power) with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” [Bukhari and Muslim] Aisha (ra) said: “I asked the Prophet ﷺ, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are Oft-Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’” [Ahmad, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi]

The Laylatul Qadr Myth

Contrary to popular belief, laylatul Qadr isn’t actually worth ‘one thousand months’ or ‘eighty-three years of perpetual worship.’ It’s actually much more—an unsurmountable, intangible amount.

The word used in Surah Qadr is الف, which literally translates to ‘one-thousand.’ Many scholars have spoken about understanding this word in the linguistic usage of its time. As per the usage of the Arabs, they used it to denote a huge amount, an amazing number, an incomprehensible unit! Just like when we’re asked to quantify something which is drastically large, for example: stars, hairs, grass; we usually reply and say “thousands" or “millions," just because there’s way too much to count..just like the good deeds we can earn on laylatul qadr! The reward of the last ten nights will be what you and I make of it. Why limit yourself to a thousand months when God’s reward, bounty, and forgiveness is unlimited?

Beautiful tips! I really can't believe a third of Ramadhan is already over. Tonight I'm going to make a checklist and list of things that I must complete every day so that I can feel like i'm achieving something and I want to make things more structured so that I can benefit from this blessed month even more.
