Windows 7

I managed to get an offer for Windows 7 Professional for £30 (as a download only version - it is or have access to an email address ending in .sch.uk or .ac.uk and a few others too) and since my Vista installation was both slow and the install of Vista Service Pack two was constantly failing, I thought it would be a good offer to waste the money. I did and this post is being written from Windows 7 Professional.

What is the difference between Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional? who cares - it has more features - most of which I will not use, but since they were both on offer for the same price, why would I go for the one with less features?

I used the RC's available before so there were not many problems expected and the only hurdle left is security software - Microsoft has recently launched "Microsoft Security Essentials" which will compete with the free versions of Avast!4 Home Avira Antivir and also AVG... choices choices.

erm... its basically Vista in a very slightly updated, prettier shell. With some slight tweaks.

If you mean feature difference between home premium and professional, then... erm... professional can be added to some sort of network that the home premium can't... and .. well... the comparison side had loads more ticks in the column. I did not really read what they were next to, just the number of them being there.

Windows 7 is also supposed to be slightly more stable, slightly better performance - really a smlightly tweaked version of Vista. Though some people may dislike the new taskbar.

Get a free upgrade from dell.gta put my order down tho jus waitin for laptop to come bak nw..yh will b loads better thn vista sp1 but vista sp2 made good improvement.

I was looking into this Windows 7 malarky and a colleague happened to advise that I stay away from it for at least 12 months and then buy it as once Windows come out with a new release, they then have to end up coming up new security patches due to teething problems so its always best to wait a year

P.s. I hate the extortionate prices of ALL softwares...good on you You, I think I know the website you got it from...alas I don't qualify for that site...

You must know someone that is a student!

Saying that, if you don't need it, best to stay away - it is reasonable to always get a new Operating System with a new pc so as long as the current one keeps working, no need to, unless something goes wrong or some software explicitly needs it.

Under the hood this is going to be pretty close to what vista was, so there should be few compatibility problems.

Yh it is a good idea to stay away for a few months until they bring out a new system pack for win7 tht fixes all the bugs.....yet the RC version was out about a year ago so shudnt be many issues if u hav a good system - can use upgrade advisor to check system compatibilty........most drivers will work as win7 uses same drivers as vista.

One thing about such "common wisdom" that goes round is that it is rarely common and often it is not wise...

Yes, with Vista it may have been good to avoid. With WIndows 7, as with all OS updates it is best to wait for a new pc/laptop that comes with it pre-installed. However, if you do not want to do that, windows 7 is in a way nothing more than a glorified service pack for Vista.

Guess I have student cousins - could ask them to perhaps register and give em the money. I suppose I'm ok with the OS I have then. I'm on Windows XP Home serveice pack 2 or 3 can't remember but I know I've never been on Vista - guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it...now to get my cousin to register to that site!!

Opposing messages? Seriously, if you are happy with XP Home, stick with it - unless you can find some benefit in it for you. Such tinkering is normally what us geeks do, but it is not necessary. XP still works. its just a little ugly.

(all teh registering does is give them a link they can then use one time - after that the details can be anyones I think)

Lols! Sorry confused you there. The website also has other software going cheap. I'm happy with XP but gunna get cousin to register so I can check out other software packages, looking at Office 2007 but just looking since I managed to download a compatibility pack for 2003 to 2007 - no harm in looking tho. Also hope to see if this site packages like Photoshop, cheaper..fingers crossed

oh.

No idea which site you are talking about though - the one I linked to only seems to do Windows 7.

I don't need any of the other stuff though as I generally use .

Umm the site I'm harpin' on about is software4students.com or .co.uk - one of the 2. Not checked it out for a while now since I realised it really is for ish-students only - obv the web address doesn't give much away!

Btw the raggedy raggedy raggedy edge - good site Lol - all your own work? So r u a website developer then?

Am I? good question. I can do bits and bobs here and there.

The prices on that site do seem pretty low. I just don't need most of that stuff.
