Android barcode scanner?

I have instlled the barcode scanner app and scanned a bar of snickers, a packet of Tangy Toms and a bottle of lucozade.

No success. It scanned the barcodes successfully, but the products were not recognised. Am I doing it wrong? Do I need to pair it with another app?

You "need" to get over your stupid phone ¬_¬

When would you realistically ever need a barcode scanner?!

To make sure the Snickers I ate was legit?

On a more serious note apparently people can scan a barcode of an item and somehow through magic find out if the same products is available cheaper elsewhere.

Not that I am likely to use it... but it has geek value.
