Talk about that boy who got stabbed for not memorising the quran.
Or about that girl who somehw got married to the Quran?
—
And I heard as it were, the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying come and see and I beheld, a pale horse. And his name that sat on him was Death... and Hell followed with him.
Or about that girl who somehw got married to the Quran?
WHAT?
It was in the news. Happnd in some backwater village.
Whats that all about?

This reminds me of a book I read a number of years back. There was a girl who got on well with her older brother. They were from a wealthy family in Pakistan. The girl was about to get married to a well to do chap who she liked but then her brother died and she was do be the heir to the family fortune so to protect this fortune, her parents made her into a "Holy Woman" (marrying the Quran) and she wasn't happy initially, but it's a real rollercoaster of emotions story.
The book was called The Holy Woman. Very entertaining.
Didn't realise that things like that actually happened in real life too.

Yep. I remember reading this. And it wasnt in some backwater village or anything. The people doing this werent uneducated folk either, they were educated ministers.
Not read or even heard of the book but it sounds crazy.
Same, but I'm more interested/concerned about this news story in which it was actually done in real life :S
In the book (and in the news story, if anyone else knows about it) how exactly did they make them "marry" the Qur'an?! Is it like becoming a nun or something?
I have never ever heard of such a thing in my whole existance. What is the world coming to?! The Quran belongs to Allah so obviously if Allah doesn't give permission but the parents do, it still isn't valid, so how exactly does this 'marriage' even work?!
Its more or less like telling a 12 year old that they are going to become a nun for the rest of your life. No choice. With any dreams or hopes of marriage or children obliterated.
According to the news article it was done to keep the family wealth within the family. And in order to legitamise it they give it a religious overtone.
Celibacy isn't something thats allowed in Islam, so why someone would do that, i don't know. Being a nun and a religious teacher are very far from each and i don't think they should be used together at all. Religious teachers are not nuns. They have a married life too, not to a holy book, but to a human being. If such a person reached a higher status in terms of knowledge, i am so sure they would know how wrong the concept of 'marrying a Quran is' and how wrong their parents were for thinking such a thing.

The woman in the book is a nun (in that she's not allowed to marry) and she's a religious teacher (Aalima) also.
I agree that:
"If such a person reached a higher status in terms of knowledge, i am so sure they would know how wrong the concept of 'marrying a Quran is' and how wrong their parents were for thinking such a thing"
You should read the book. It's full of "typical" characters. Very entertaining.
Yes it is thuggish and I hate the fact that they are acting as though they represent all Muslims/Islam. However even if you ignore their thuggish behaviour, they still, like others, would think shoving your opinion down someone's throat is a good way to make people think differently. They are ignoring the importance of respect and so on and so forth. I think it'd be a good topic to talk about. Ed can add in the whole "walking talking adverts for Islam" slogan too.
