Practices | 9th and 10th Muharram

Asslamu Alaykoum Smile

The first month Muharram, is a month of great reward and virtue. Muharram itself means `sacred' and is from those months which have been mentioned as sacred in the Holy Quraan.

Almighty Allah states in the Holy Quraan:

"Four of them ( Zil-Qadah, Zil-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab) are sacred."
(Surah At-Tawbah:36)

From out of the four sacred months, Muharram has been blessed with certain specific virtues:-
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said:

"The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadhan is the fasting of Allah's month of Muharram."
(Muslim)

n another Hadeeth, Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallahu-Anhu) reports: "that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said: "The one that keeps a fast in the month of Muharram will receive the reward of thirty fasts for each fast (in this sacred month)."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallahu-Anhu) said:

"When Rasulullah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) observed the fast of the day of Aashora and ordered (his Companions) to fast, they said: `O Rasulullah! It is a day revered (glorified) by the Jews and Christians.' Thereupon Rasulullah said: "The coming year, if Allah wills (I remain alive), I will for surely fast on the ninth (also)."

Ibn Abbas Radhiallaho Anhu, when the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam migrated to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10 th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa Alayhis Salaam and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously, and the Pharaoh was drowned in its water. On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam said, “We are more closely related to Musa than you.” So the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura. (Abu Dawood)

These Ahadeeth indicate clearly that one should fast on the ninth and tenth of Muharram. However, if one does not manage to fast on the ninth, then he/she should fast on the eleventh of Muharram instead.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said:

"Observe the fast of Aashora and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it or a day after."

One should be generous on one's family and dependants and spend more on them than what is normally spent.
Rasulullah (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) said:

"One who generously spends on his family on the day of Aashora, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year." (Baihaqi)

Knowledge is better than wealth since knowledge protects you while you protect wealth.
Knowledge increases when you share it , wealth decreases.
Knowledge is a judge while wealth is judged over.

I would also just like to add that i hear alot of muslims sating things like you shouldn't get married in this month, go on holiday etc. i have absolutely no idea where they got this from but it seems to me like it's just one of those superstitions. I haven't geard this from any scholars/ imams so i see no evidence for it and on top of that many sheikhs say it is a biddah practice.

IMO i think it's best to stay away from practices that have no hadith or Qur'an backing. Allah knows best.

It is also personal preference.

While none of those things are banned, some people dont like the mental idea to eg get married at the time of year when the prophet (saw)'s grandson ande family was being martyred.

While I dont agree with any prohibition, I personally dont have an issue with someone having such a thought either.

It's not a superstition but people think it's respectful to not have celebrations in a month which historically is so sad.

month is overdoing it.

there are only 12 months and you can find something to have happened at some point in them all I suspect.

nothing was more beloved to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) than his family.

Yeah i get that but it doesn't make sense, it's just some randomness that people like to add with no significance. On top of that they'll tell people to stop doing certain things in this month, i've even heard people say your marrriage will be cursed if you etc.

The mourning period of anyones death should be 3 days, IMO it's just an asian cultural thing like the khattam and how on the anniversary of someones death they give out food etc. i just see it as innovation

Plus are we forgetting that this month is one of the sacred months as told by the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) where optional fasting is recommended. This was believed not just by the ummah of muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) but even the people at the time of ibrahim (as).

And another thing If we were to treat the death of all the eminent people this way then every day we'd be mourning someones death. The martyrdom of Hussain RA was a tragic occasion but there were many tragedies in the history of Islam including many prominant sahabi whether they were a part of the prophet' Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) family or not.

Seriously don't see any sense in this practice.

Allah knows best.
